LEAK DETECTION
liquid level in the receiver and alarm out when the level gets below a pre-defined point, alerting the engineer that there is a problem with that system.
Matelex
One such product, Matelex, which is available to buy in the UK from Climalife, takes this concept a stage further with the help of algorithmic calculations that learn how the system works and what levels should be expected in the receiver at a given point. It can then accurately predict when a system is starting to lose some of its charge, enabling an engineer to react quickly when a small leak is detected and before that leak develops into a larger, more costly leak, both from a refrigerant point of view and in regard to associated down-time costs.
Using a smart level sensor called the DNI, Matelex measures temperatures and pressures along with the liquid level in the receiver, taking
data every two to three seconds. The intelligent capability of the DNI starts to learn the system i tself from the minute it is installed. There are a lso a number of additional modules that can be a dded to the system in order to enhance what information is gained. These include the Energy Module, which calculates the energy consumption of the system, and the actual Coefficient of Performance (COP). Alternatively, a module that only calculates the COP is available, too. There is also an option to control the floating head pressure with the potential for energy saving, should a system not already have this fitted. It is well documented that a system low on charge is working much less efficiently and using more energy to do the same work as a correctly charged one. Matelex connects to a Sentinelle online interface for DNI management, making it a complete monitoring and traceability tool for refrigeration installations.
There are a number of parts to a system, such

as external condensers and pipework, that will not get detected using point detection alone. The Matelex product will pick up these leaks, ensuring t hat complete detection is available. It has the added flexibility in that it can be linked to a point detection system via relay outputs or BMS, so the best of both worlds can be utilised.
There are a number of supermarkets and hypermarkets across Europe, such as Carrefour, Lidl, Auchan and Intermarche already using the DNI, with reported savings in refrigerant of up to 79% according to an independent study by Ademe in February 2011.
With strict rules on leak detection on everyone’s agenda today, it makes sense to seek out some of the newer products coming to market. With products that can ensure users save both time and money, and with continued refrigerant price increases, there are some great solutions available that are well worth consideration.
