INSIDE INDUSTRY
IOR hosts first IIR International Conference on HFOs
T
he IOR hosted the inaugural IIR International Conference on the Application of HFO (A2L) refrigerants over three days this September in the UK. As the first international event on this topic, the programme sought to bring together world experts in research as well as a wide range of people actually applying these refrigerants in practice.
The purpose was the share knowledge and improve understanding of how the rapid transition to these new refrigerants is being managed by the sector. Comments from the 175 delegates from over 24 countries who
attended, and who had access to over 80 presentations, keynote talks and courses, have confirmed that the most critical issues for them are flammability, safety, risk and legislation.
As one of the delegates commented: “I have gained a better understanding some of the regulatory hurdles to implementing use of A2L refrigerants, especially risk assessments. I have discovered a lot about HFO flammability and risk, and am learning more about approaches to hazardous area zoning for A2Ls.” For many it was an opportunity to improve their understanding of HFO developments, how
they are being integrated into the market and to gain updates regarding safety considerations or barriers to wider adoption.
The event saw technical papers running in three parallel streams, and offered an invaluable opportunity to meet people with experience and knowledge in the field of flammable refrigerants was invaluable. Further information on the programme and papers is available at www.hfo2018. For those who missed the event, the full set of conference papers is available to purchase from the International Institute of Refrigeration at

Support for World Refrigeration Day gathers momentum
T
he realisation of a World Refrigeration Day, already supported by associations, is gathering momentum as manufacturers recognise the benefits of supporting the event.
Alongside such organisations such as the Institute of Refrigeration, AREA and REFCOM, Bitzer has voiced its support for the day. Patrick Koops, head of public relations said: “We at Bitzer are very much
in favour of the World Refrigeration Day’s formation. This day will give our industry the recognition it deserves as an indispensable driver of the world we live in today and in future. It will raise awareness for all the exciting job opportunities in the refrigeration sector, which definitely is a promising option for young people in their career choice.”
Industry trade associations and professional bodies from around the world are united in establishing 26 June as World Refrigeration Day which will be celebrated all over the globe as an annual event. Its formation is a way of raising awareness and understanding to the general public of the significant role that the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pumps industry and technology play in modern life
Steve Gill who has been behind the establishment of the day said: “We
have been receiving support from industry associations and bodies from all over the world which has been fantastic, but Bitzer is the first manufacturer to voice its support for World Refrigeration Day. I am absolutely delighted to receive encouragement from such a highly respected world industry leader as Bitzer, who is known for the quality of its products and services all over the globe. I am also personally very pleased that Bitzer has taken this opportunity to mention what a potentially great career the industry is for young people. It reflects not only the forward-looking values of the company but also mirrors the importance this industry holds for attracting and retaining talented young people.
