PIR detection will help to keep HVAC and lighting in synch with changing occupancy patterns post-pandemic. All Presenceand correct

Presence and motion detectors are the devices that installers want to be able to fit and forget, and that end users need to be able to trust. If you supply reliable high-quality branded products, they will do all that and should continue to fly off your shelves. Timeguard MD Andy Douglas shares more.

H

VAC, lighting and energy-saving projects increasingly rely on presence and motion detection. These are the devices the system relies on to know when there is someone within a

space, and to switch equipment on and off automatically. They also help to meet Part L of the Building Regulations requirement, that reasonable provision shall be made for the conservation of fuel and power in buildings by providing fixed building services which have efficient controls. Passive infrared is the most economical and widely used sensor

technology and it has evolved to offer all the options your customers need. The key choices here are between motion and presence detection. A PIR motion sensor is perfect to detect significant walking movements, such as walking into a room, while a presence detector will also register more

subtle actions and identify if you’re still in the room but just, say, sitting and working on your laptop at a desk. Timeguard’s high-quality range covers all requirements. Of course, there will be a price differential between motion detection and presence detection but you will want to be able to offer installers the products and sensitivity levels they need for any job, and can easily choose the most suitable products from the Timeguard catalogue. Increasingly popular now are the models that get the

movement/sensitivity balance just right with precision sensitivity covering the core detection field plus motion detection extending over a wider area. The ‘flagship’ flush-mount SLFM360N and surface mount SLW360N have detection fields that offer 4m diameter for inner presence detection, and 8m diameters for extended motion detection. Even Timeguard’s clever and compact linkable mini-PIRs offer presence & motion detection with an impressive 3m and 8m, respectively.
