FOLLOWING ITS ACQUISITION BY NIDEC AND APPOINTMENT OF A NEW PRESIDENT, CONTROL TECHNIQUES IS SET FOR A FRESH START IN THE DRIVES MARKET

At a press conference in London this month, Anthony Pickering, who was appointed last December as president of Control Techniques, announced that the company has ambitious plans to return to the top table of drives manufacturers. This comes almost a year after the company was acquired by Japan’s Nidec group of companies. Control Techniques has been manufacturing

drives since 1973 (coincidentally the same year Nidec was established). As well as offering an enhanced product range that will be simplified in order to meet market demands, Control Techniques will be re-branding its products, which will return to the green colour most of you will be familiar with. The products will be under four families: Unidrive – performance drives; Digitax – servo

AUDI CENTRE IN GERMANY TO USE 3D PRINTING TO ACCELERATE DESIGN VERIFICATION

The Audi Pre-Series Centre in Ingolstadt, Germany, which features a Plastics 3D Printing Centre, is to use the Stratasys J750 full-colour multi-material 3D printer to innovate its design process and accelerate design verification. Before a new vehicle goes into production, the Centre builds

physical models and prototypes to evaluate new designs and concepts thoroughly. This requires allocation of most parts of the vehicle in an early stage of product development – everything from wheel covers and door handles to radiator grills. 3D printing has now become an integral part of the automotive design process. In the case of tail light covers, the team traditionally used milling

or moulding to produce individual parts, but the multi-coloured covers of the tail light housing were a challenge. 3D printing will enable production of entirely transparent, multi-coloured, tail light covers in a single print, the company explains.

STOBER BUILDS ROBOTIC SYSTEM TO MANUFACTURE ITS NEW DRIVE

2018 is proving to be

a very busy year for exhibitions. With Subcon taking place just a couple of weeks ago, we now have a short break over the summer before launching back into the next lot of events. Coming up are: Sensors &

Instrumentation, plus the PPMA - Processing Packaging Machinery - show in September (NEC, Birmingham); the Engineering Design Show in October (Ricoh Arena, Coventry); and then Advanced Engineering on 31 October to 1 November (NEC, Birmingham). Information on all these shows will be included in the pages of Design Solutions over the coming months.

STOBER Drives has used products from its own range to design and build a robotic component mounting system to manufacture the new LeanMotor encoderless drive. According to the company, LeanMotor is a brand new energy- efficient drive system that ‘bridges the gap between a synchronous and an asynchronous drive’. The new automated production

system used to produce LeanMotor couples STOBER’s newest technology with its existing STOBER AS6 Automation Control Suite. This cost effective piece of production plant has enabled the company to significantly streamline its manufacturing processes. www.stober.co.uk

SOUTHCO EARNS UL RECOGNITION

Southco has collaborated with UL to complete testing of a select portfolio of its hinge and latch products according to the newly released FTTA2/FTTA8 Recognition Certification. This evaluates their resistance to corrosion and performance degradation due to environmental conditions and usage over time.
