A CONDITION MONITORING MODULE FOR MACHINES

New from ABB is the FM502-CMS (condition monitoring system) module which allows precise and reliable real-time monitoring of machine or

operation condition. The module offers flexibility

and easy integration with all kinds of machinery

systems. It can be used as a standalone condition monitoring device or integrated into the machine or process control to build optimised, self-analysing, automation solutions. As a result, condition monitoring, control, protection, safety and data logger functions can be carried out with one controller, simultaneously. The system, which is based on the AC500 platform

modularity, helps protect against machine faults, unforeseen sudden damage, incorrect installation, or unnecessary maintenance and wear. For ease of use, the module is also included in ABB Automation Builder, coming with configuration and documentation, libraries and example programs.

HMI DEVICES FOR ‘BASIC’

APPLICATIONS

New to Phoenix Contact’s visualisation device and operator panel product portfolio is the BTP 2000 HMI device series – affordable touch panels for basic applications. The HMI device is available in 4”, 7” and 10” display variants and offers high flexibility in connection control systems thanks to the integration of various third party drivers with serial and Ethernet-based communication. For configuration tasks, users have free access to Visu+ Express, an extensive configuration software specially designed for HMI devices.

SENSORS SUIT QUALITY CONTROL SYSTEMS

The robust and easy to use Verisens VS XC and XF vision sensors from Baumer have been integrated into the quality control systems built by The Technology Business, a provider of integrated automation and inspection systems. The low cost of ownership/price performance ratio were important factors in the company’s decision to choose the sensors, according to Barry Fowler, managing director. He added: “Baumer was the only supplier able to offer us an IP69k rated vision sensor. Furthermore, the performance of the Verisens sensors and our ability to fully integrate them into existing PLC systems have helped us to overcome some specific challenges across a number of applications.” Today’s image processing systems face the challenges of successfully completing complex inspection tasks at the highest speeds, so the quality and performance of the vision sensors are crucial.

Baumer’s vision sensor range spans cameras to vision sensors providing resolution from VGA up to two megapixel to suit the widest range of applications. They enable complex process control tasks to be managed by utilising image processing technology without the need for a PC. Thanks to the intuitive configuration interface, vision sensor integration is both easy and rapid. According to the company, the Verisens vision sensors are ideal for automation technology applications combining the

benefits of high quality sensing, along with maximum functionality and versatility. They provide image based processing and identification with one single sensor, are easy to configure and can be connected via digital I/O and industrial Ethernet.

Omron has expanded its Temperature Controller portfolio with the introduction of the new NX-TC series with Artificial Intelligence (AI). Designed for multi-loop applications, the intelligent controllers provide easier in-panel installation. These are a new generation of smart devices that are designed to achieve optimal and automatic temperature control without human intervention. From now on, all adjustments typically made in the field by experts will be automated using Artificial Intelligence. The ‘adaptive control technology’ automatically detects changes in the process under control and adapts the PID accordingly. The result is said to be a perfectly tuned PID algorithm and ultra-stable temperature control. As an example, these provide ideal sealing temperature control for packaging machines

as: the special temperature sensor models with faster detection allow the sensor to be placed closer to the sealing surface; and the specially developed embedded algorithms, such as automatic filter adjustment, help to suppress temperature variations, resulting in a better sealing quality. In addition, for water-cooled extrusion moulding machines, the NX-TC has a water-cooling output adjustment function that keeps temperature variations to a minimum, increasing production capacity while maintaining quality.

FAST RESPONSE

SAFETY RELAYS In a range of just four products, the SICK ReLy safety relays meet most needs for monitoring safety functions or safety sensors up to PL e (EN ISO 13849) and SIL3 (IEC 61508), while enabling simpler selection, installation and maintenance. These offer a 10ms response time with a long and durable lifecycle. According to the company, the safety relay more than halves the response time of comparable safety relays, thereby reducing corresponding safety distances. Even a small reduction in safety distances can result in a significant overall increase in operator productivity on a machine. The addition of a ‘reset-required’ output to the ReLy relays and on-board diagnostics via an LED status display enables easy maintenance with minimal downtime. These also have a narrow 18mm wide housing with easy push-in front wiring and a one-click fit-and- release mechanism. The ReLy OSSD1 is for sensors with

OSSD outputs and integrated reset/EDM functions, so is especially suited to advanced AOPD devices such as scanners and advanced light curtains. The ReLy OSSD2 incudes input and output reset buttons with flashing LEDs for sensors, with OSSD outputs but without reset/EDM functions such as simpler light curtain units, sensors and door interlocks. The ReLy EMSS1 provides an option for mechanical switches such as emergency stops and door switches, while the ReLy HAND1 is designed specifically for 2-hands-safety protection modules, as in EN574. Seb Strutt, SICK UK’s safety

specialist, commented: “SICK’s ReLy safety relays therefore offer some great ‘new tricks’ from an old friend. Our aim was to achieve true gains in performance and usability while making it easier for engineers to stay with a high-performing range they can rely on, saving their selection time and reducing stock inventories.”
