FEATURE GEARS & GEARBOXES If you need to specify gear technology for your application, there are a

number of options available – including gear sets, precision gear units, geared motors, and magnetic gears. Here we take a look at the features these offer and the applications they can be used in

Gear technology for today’s applications F

or applications such as mechanical handling equipment in production and

processing plants, where maximum torque density and high precision are needed, Harmonic Drive UK can provide its new CSG-2A Series Component Set. According to the company, the strain wave gear has been designed for highly dynamic applications. The set consists of a Circular Spline,

Flexspline and Wave Generator, and there are ten sizes to choose from with gear ratios ranging from 50 to 160:1, offering peak torques from 23 to 3419Nm and a torque density of 260 to 545Nm/kg. In addition to lifetime precision, the series offers zero backlash with very high transmission and positioning accuracy. Graham Mackrell, managing director of

Harmonic Drive, commented: “When handling components, gear systems used in the equipment must be able to provide highly dynamic acceleration and deceleration, as well as quickly span traverse paths at high speeds. More importantly, in the event of a collision, any shock loads should cause as little damage as possible. “It is for this reason that we created the

CSG Series with a 30% increase in collision torque. This feature makes them the ideal choice for handling equipment as it offers a significantly higher resistance to shock loads than standard strain wave gears.” Of additional benefit to designers, the high torque density of the CSG Series Sets means that space requirements in the gear system are reduced, allowing engineers to design more compact actuators depending on the needs of the application.

torque transmission and backlash-free performance is required, Heason Technology is offering Spinea’s TwinSpin gear unit range. This has recently been expanded with a new version of its integrated radial-axial bearing gear reducer which offers significantly improved performance. As a result, the new G series has reduced bearing friction and hysteresis for lower lost motion; a significantly upgraded torque-to-weight ratio; and a double-digit increase in tilting stiffness for much improved rigidity. The result of this is smaller, lighter and less complex machine designs which brings cost benefits and extends application potential, the company explains. With the new series, there are nine frame sizes available,

covering rated torques from 34 to 4000Nm with sealed output-only or fully sealed gear unit variants for direct connection with a drive motor. Maximum acceleration torque is model dependant at between two- and approximately three-times the rated torque. Within each model range, standard reduction ratios span from around 40 to 75:1 for the smallest unit and 59 to 107:1 for the largest, whilst rated input speeds are up to 2000rpm. Version options include gear units with hollow shafts which can accommodate slip rings, electrical cables and other services for convenient machinery installations. The TwinSpin principle has been

successfully applied to robotics, machine tools and tool changers, handling and assembly machines, defence and surveillance tracking systems, and much more, the company explains.

GEARED MOTORS According to Nord Drivesystems, different gear units and motor types, sizes, options and gear ratios often result in a large variety of drive versions. However, reducing the variants can result in optimised processes and costs. So, for intralogistics, the company is offering the

highly efficient, compact and lightweight, LogiDrive IE4 geared motors. LogiDrive drive units comprise an IE4 synchronous motor with rated powers of up to 5.5kW, a 2-stage helical bevel gear unit and a frequency inverter which is installed close to the motor. The inverter is equipped with a mains switch, a key switch to isolate the drive unit from the system controller and a direction selector switch for local installation mode. AS-i and all common fieldbus and industrial Ethernet interfaces can be integrated. With class IE4 motor efficiency and system efficiency to class IES2, the drive units achieve excellent overall efficiencies - especially in the partial load and speed range. Additional features of the range include safety functions STO and SS1 according to DIN EN 61800-5-2 and DIN EN 60204-1 and a high overload capacity.

MAGNETIC GEARS For windpower applications, Magnomatics offers its magnetic gear solutions. The company recently participated in the Innovate and Go Global visits, which are part of an international business programme aimed at attracting inward investment to the UK through developing collaborative partnerships between innovative companies from Britain and around the globe. Here, the company showcased its

magnetically-geared generator, or Pseudo-Direct Drive (PDD), a smaller, lighter and more efficient alternative to the direct drive generators commonly used in wind turbine power conversion, the company explains. The PDD can be scaled to 10MW and beyond to deliver annual energy output and cost of energy. Further benefits include optimised servicing and reduced system complexity.
