WASHERS OFFER HIGH SPRING LOADING IN A SMALL SPACE
With their conical configuration, Lee Spring’s Belleville Washers can support high loads with relatively small deflections and solid heights and, as a result, can solve vibration, thermal expansion, relaxation, and bolt creep problems. Although they can be used individually, the washers are generally
A WIDE RANGE OF
TRANSFER CHAINS Transfer chains are often used where goods need to be conveyed to the next stage of the production process, including in situations that require particular cleanliness or especially gentle conveying of sensitive or fragile goods. To meet requirements, iwis offers a
comprehensive range of transfer chains with durable plastic attachments. The functional sections of the chain are completely enclosed so the product stays clean and undamaged, no dust or dirt can build up on the chain, goods are conveyed on a flat surface, and there is no lifting of the load when the chain passes over the sprockets. The three attachment versions –
for standard, high-temperature and antistatic applications – are all made from extremely hard-wearing materials. Depending on the attachment and lubricant selected, the chains can be used in temperatures ranging from -50˚C to 150˚C. They can also be provided in food-grade (H1) or silicone-free (PWIS) requirements. As well as the standard iwis base
chain SL, special chain versions such as nickel-plated or maintenance-free chains from the MEGAlife brand range are also available.

stacked in multiple cylinder or column configurations as: all in parallel, all stacked opposite alternately, or a combination of the two with multiples stacked alternately face-to-face. In this way, a single Belleville Spring Washer has a specific load for a given deflection. Two washers stacked in parallel will yield double the load of a single washer for the same deflection; three washers will yield triple the load; four washers will yield four times the load, etc. Alternatively, two washers stacked in series will yield double the deflection of a single washer for the same load; three washers will yield triple the deflection; four washers will yield four times the deflection, etc. Various series-parallel combinations therefore can provide a wide variety of combined results of load versus deflection for the stack.
Lee Spring BRASS INSERTS HEAD TO SPACE
Fitsco’s Screwfit brass inserts for plastics have been used as part of a project that takes UK launched near-space craft clean through the troposphere and into the stratosphere, upwards of 40km. Here, air pressure is less than 1% of that at ground level and temperatures drop to below -60˚C. The balloon programme is the brainchild of former Sheffield
University Engineering PhD students Alex Baker and Chris Rose who decided to see if they could take a picture of the Earth from the edge of space. The business they established, Sent Into Space designs, manufactures, launches and recovers special balloon payloads which ascend into near-space, taking with them anything from cameras and scientific experiments to
instantly recognisable brand images for household names. Although the specific application of Fitsco’s threaded inserts
are a closely guarded secret on the Sent into Space programme, their use is clearly a matter of some gravity to Fitsco, which has been supplying leading OEMs and innovators with quality British-made inserts for almost 30 years.

IMPROVED BEARING HOUSING RANGE
While retaining all the performance benefits of its predecessors, SKF’s new SNL split pillow block bearing housings are said to offer significant usability improvements. Markings cast into the housings now
indicate the proper grease level for an initial 20 or 40% lubricant fill. The relubrication port has been offset from the centre of the shaft axis, aiding the flow of grease into the housing, and an integrated flange guides grease from the fitting directly to the bearing. A drilled, tapped and plugged grease evacuation hole on the side of the housing is an option, and a comprehensive range of sealing options is available. To aid installation and alignment, the
bases of the SNL housings feature a 45˚ chamfer and cast-in lines indicating the centre of the bearing seat and the housing bore axis. Model number designations are now more clearly marked; and the use of high-grade cast iron materials has allowed SKF to make the new housings lighter. SNL housings are available to suit bearing outer diameters from 20mm to 400mm.

Comprehensive cleaning regimes are commonplace in the food industry, however these can prove detrimental to bearings, as steam, high-pressure water jets or cleaning agents can cause foreign objects to enter the bearings, or lubricant to be washed out. To overcome these issues, NSK offers Molded-Oil bearings. The lubricant within Molded-Oil bearings is
incorporated inside a stable carrier medium – an oil-impregnated polyofin resin. This cannot be washed away by steam or liquids, and prevents contamination from entering. In addition, sufficient lubrication is maintained over a long operating period. A wide range of Molded-Oil bearings is

available, including deep groove ball bearings, spherical roller bearings and tapered roller bearings, in several product series and in special forms such as housed bearing units. The range also includes stainless steel versions. As an example, at one British food
manufacturer the standard deep groove ball bearings in a seven-track conveyor system were only lasting for four months due to water penetration. After inspecting the bearings, NSK recommended using stainless steel bearings with Molded-Oil lubrication and DU seals on both sides. Following the installation, bearing operating life increased three-fold, to 12 months, while bearing-related maintenance costs (including
downtime) were reduced by more than €52,000 annually. The story was similar at a manufacturer of frozen pizzas, where failures were being experienced every four weeks on the belt tensioner serving a food conveyor. Installing Molded-Oil bearings resulted in a significantly prolonged operating life, plus annual cost savings of approximately €15,700. These are just two of the many applications where Molded-Oil bearings have proved beneficial.
