McDonald’s I

n 2024, McDonald’s celebrates 50 years in the UK & Ireland, having opened its very fi rst UK branch in Woolwich, south

east London, in 1974. With ambitious plans for growth and continued investment in sustainability, technology, local communities and young employees, McDonald’s offers exciting opportunities for franchisees interested in joining one of the world’s most iconic brands. Latest developments include the opening

of McDonald’s fi rst net-zero restaurant, in Market Drayton in 2021, with plans for this to serve as an ideal blueprint for restaurants in the future and franchisees can also look forward to further in-store, drive-thru and delivery innovations, plus a customer loyalty scheme – My McDonald’s Rewards. Much of the brand’s success is down to the

hard work and commitment of its franchisees, those looking for an opportunity to start their own business with the support of a larger, established organisation. McDonald’s works closely with its franchise network and in 2019 won the BFA award for Leadership and Culture, crediting the efforts it puts into leading the market and evolving its workplace culture. With over 30 years of franchising in the UK, and with more than 90 per cent of the UK

network operated by franchisees, becoming a McDonald’s owner-operator can be a hugely rewarding opportunity. Franchisees have access to McDonald’s tried-and-tested methods, its research and development functions and its supply chain, which works with more than 23,000 UK & Irish farmers to produce so many ingredients for its popular menus. Most importantly, franchisees have the support and training that a standalone business simply wouldn’t have. Being a McDonald’s franchisee is a 20-year

commitment, which is one of the reasons why it’s so selective – McDonald’s wants to work with the right people. While you don’t need experience in the food industry, it’s important that you have a passion for the business and a personable, motivated approach to be able to lead your team from the front. Successful applicants are invited to participate

in the Franchisee Training Programme, which involves restaurant training for a minimum of 16 weeks, followed by a business immersion and handover process. McDonald’s provides an educational bursary to support applicants during this process and franchisees are supported through this training to ensure they know every detail about the business they are buying into.
