What qualities should someone possess to succeed with a McDonald’s franchise? People skills are fundamental because it’s a ‘people-centric’ job – we deal with people day-in, day-out, aiming to give them the best possible experience! Our organisations can become very, very big and you’ve got to have excellent leadership skills to manage the growth. Summed up, it’s: ambition, a clear strategy and formulating a plan to deliver it … that’s what’s important.


Sarah Lloyd-Sharp is a multi- unit McDonald’s franchisee in the South of England and runs eight restaurants


Sarah, you’ve gone from running one store to eight, in less than five years! What is it about franchising that enables this kind of growth? It’s ultimately what franchising is all about! You join a brand that has a tried-and- tested formula, as well as the support and systems already in place, which means you can concentrate on growing the business rather than starting from scratch. And while no business is ever risk-free, it’s mitigated. It’s reassuring to know that you have the backing of a globally recognised brand with a long and significant track record and a hugely efficient, successful franchise model.


Any standout moments for you since becoming a McDonald’s franchisee? The standout moment for me was getting my first store, but each new acquisition has been a fresh challenge and an opportunity to make a difference! Seeing the original team from my first restaurant grow with the business has been so rewarding. Another recent highlight was being


invited to visit the Innovation Centre in McDonald’s Headquarters in Chicago, where I took part in a major review of current restaurant operations and procedures, with the aim of improving productivity. Being able to share my views on areas that I felt could be better was a privilege, and a humbling reminder of
