B Regulatory body
British Franchise Association
T
he British Franchise Association (BFA) was established in 1977 through the formation of eight of the largest
franchises – ServiceMaster, Dyno-Rod, Holiday Inn UK, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Wimpy International, Ziebart GB, Prontaprint and Budget Rent a Car – to separate their credible business models from those that claimed to be similar but were essentially unethical and gave the industry a bad name. The BFA has always been the voice of
ethical franchising in the UK and provider of objective information and advice to prospective franchisees and businesses considering franchising. The association now looks to be the leading educator in franchising, offering support, guidance, information, professional help and best practice advice, as well as continuing to increase the awareness of ethical franchising by communicating with the government, academia, the media and the UK public on what constitutes franchising best practice. Membership provides access to many valuable networking opportunities and educational events, allowing members to share knowhow, best practice and support.
Its primary aim, along with leading the way
as educators in the industry, is to champion ethical franchising in the UK and further afi eld. It does this with a self-regulatory, standards- based approach to membership. The process is rigorous and thorough, with the criteria for BFA franchisor membership today involving four main components comprised of viability, transferability, ethicality and transparency. Franchising has come a long way in a short
time. Today, the franchise business model has been applied across a large spectrum of businesses – from home-based dog walking, children’s dance schools and elderly care, through to multinational retail businesses, hotels and some of the largest global brands. It is vital that you carry out due diligence on your chosen franchisor and to check for BFA membership as a sure sign of ethical practice. The right advice is absolutely crucial, and so the BFA also accredits franchise advisors, including consultants, solicitors, accountants and bankers. The BFA prides itself on promoting franchising as a viable business model, always looking to broaden the reach and awareness of the industry.
