Where are we now?

Conference chair Robin Hoyle surveys the 0 Lscape  and finds the vie pleasing

I

t’s been an interesting few years, hasn’t it? It’s great to welcome everyone back to the NEC for The World of Learning but that in no way heralds some kind of

return to absolute ‘normal’ – the seismic changes of the recent past will have long-lasting effects. For some, this has been a painful period. Those focused primarily on classroom learning have had to deal

with the most disruption, but whether you were a digital devotee, a virtual visionary or orko onder, youve also had to take stock and rethink approaches. So, where are we now?

We did some great stuff! I’ve been amazed at how L&D teams have moved centre stage and have grasped their chance to shine. The ability to embrace delivering learning to where people are – whether digital

tools or virtual sessions or work-based learning (and preferably a combination of all three) has shown innovation and tenacity at its best. The rapid analysis of the challenges, and routes to responding to them, has been good to see; creativity was released and many of the resulting developments worked…

…But not in all cases! Frankly some folks took the easy way out. Expecting people to attend virtual sessions for whole – or even multiple – days, in a rubbish facsimile of what they used to do in a conference room, has been painful to see and even more painful to experience. The driver in instances such as these has been to suit the convenience of trainers unwilling or unable to rethink their working practices.
