Why are we watching? Watching video for entertainment is a passive activity. But video for learning isn’t entertainment. It has a purpose. It progresses from passive to active as soon as you start to reect on, and ideally discuss, what you’ve watched. Then – maybe look things up, read about the topic, talk some more and, yes, even change your behaviour and do things better as a result of what you’ve watched.


Integrating into everyday work If you think about what you’ve seen,


Don’t put video somewhere obscure and expect people to watch. Firstly, it will never enter their busy minds to go and ‘do’ some online learning, and secondly, if you bury it several clicks into a remote and dusty part of your portal, people will never find the video, even in the unlikely event they go looking for it. The key is to make it easily accessible, as part of everyday working life. Video works well at the start of meetings, as part of one-on-one conversations, in workshops and team sessions, as well as for private personal learning. Each week, at Scott Bradbury, we watch a short video, or listen to a 10-minute podcast as a team, and then spend 20 minutes discussing it and talking about how we want to use the ideas presented. Putting links to videos in ‘Chat’ in online meetings is a great way to add variety to get-togethers, and to integrate useful discussions into the o of ork nd you can add video links to internal comms and corporate newsletters. It doesn’t have to be called learning to be learning nd its better that way.
