Gathering intelligence…
It’s in the way you use digital that creates the results, according to Towards Maturity
and the majority of L&D leaders are focusing on accelerating digital because they believe it holds the key to help more people increase their performance. Over the past five years, investments in the digital agenda have been significant, and organisations now use an average of 19 different learning technologies and spend 18 per cent of their L&D budgets on digital. There is still a perception that just by investing in more digital and increasing the reach and access to learning, the results will magically appear.
O
ver 98 per cent of organisations are on a mission to transform the impact of their learning strategy,
The ways in which learning technologies are used can dramatically accelerate the learning transformation
We have been tracking the impact
of digital on learning for over 15 years. The evidence tells us that learning technologies alone do not correlate to
business or learning impact; however, the way they are used can dramatically accelerate the learning transformation. Ninety per cent of respondents in our Learning Health Check are not realising the benefits of their digital investments, but they are still planning to invest more without full awareness of why they have not seen success. When we analyse high-performing learning cultures we see a very different story. They spend 33 per cent of their overall budget on digital, but it’s not the increased spend that is allowing them to achieve more, it is their approach. Their top focus is to create a learner consumer-centric model that aligns with the critical business capability priorities. They involve learners in design (97 per cent v 25 per cent average), organise learning resources to be easier to find (84 per cent v 27 per cent average), and utilise analytics to improve the learning experience (61 per cent v 16 per cent average).
When we analyse why organisations with learning cultures are achieving more, we see six common traits – clear purpose of L&D, learning experiences, learning ecosystem, nimble and agile, actively engaged, and business intelligence – which allow them to focus on the critical business problems, gathering the right business intelligence and driving an evidence-based L&D culture. Without evidence, decisions
regarding investments become risky and less-informed, and could be based on bias. Further evidence on the learning culture of your organisation can be established through our Learner Intelligence programme, one of the Strategic Services we offer from our analysts at Towards Maturity.
