EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

From the heart of Tuscany, a region known for its rich history, scenic beauty, and unparalleled art, emerges Marco Faraone, a DJ and producer who encapsulates the very essence of Italian artistry. Founder of the revolutionary label UNCAGE, Marco has, since 2008 the year of his first release, shared not only his personal music creations but also elevated fellow artists such as Radio Slave, Anfisa Letyago, and Marcel Fengler.

His expansive collaborations with renowned labels like Drumcode (10 years anniversary) and Rekids, Ovum, Cocoon and Get Physical further underscore his pivotal role in the electronic music industry. But it isn’t just Marco’s affiliations that command attention; it’s the story he weaves into his music, drawing from a deep well of inspirations that range from the house giants like Masters At Work and Laurent Garnier to hip-hop legends like Run DMC and Tupac Shakur.

A cornerstone of Marco’s craft lies in his unwavering commitment to maintaining the essence of DJing. As the musical landscape evolves — marked by technological advance- ments, fluctuating audience tastes, and the undeniable pull of commercialization — it’s all too common for artists to stray from their core. Yet, Marco’s dedication remains steadfast. To him, the DJ’s role holds sacred importance. This reverence is palpably evident, spanning from his studio work to his live performances. Amnesia Ibiza serves as a prime venue to witness this, a club Marco describes as offering “the right space to express myself in varied musical scenarios”. Whether playing in different rooms at Amnesia or venues across the globe, Marco’s DJ prowess is unmistakable. His vision transcends mere words; it’s a tangible force when he takes the stage.

In a recent interview with us, Marco delved deep into his perceptions about DJing, offering insights that speak volumes about his commitment to the craft. “The most important thing,” Marco emphasized, “is to always try to do what you love.” These words aren’t mere platitudes; they define his journey, revealing an artist unfettered by the boundaries often imposed by the industry. In Marco’s perspective, if an artist feels a particular direction or sound, they should embrace it, shunning fears of labels or categorization. His criticism of those who restrict themselves for fear of “not sounding like me” is an earnest plea for artistic liberation. He passionately argues against confining oneself, stating that such limitations go against the spirit of music, which should embody freedom. Another excellent example of Marco’s capabili- ties in the DJ booth was his inaugural UNCAGE event at Input in Barcelona. Achieving a sold- out status, it served as a phenomenal launch for his signature events. This success has set the stage for an exciting 2024, with more events planned across Europe, the US, and Latin America.

a symbol of passion, dedication, and innova- tion in an industry that’s constantly in flux. Representing the soul of Tuscany, his roots, Marco melds his deep-seated appreciation for

classic tunes with a modern flair that captivates audiences worldwide. His commitment to the art of DJing and producing has not only elevated the stature of his home label UNCAGE but has also invigorated the entire electronic music community.

His fluidity across genres is nothing short of mesmerizing. Each set he plays around the globe, each track he put on the decks, is a testament to his unyielding commitment to the craft. He effortlessly drifts between the pulsating rhythms of techno, the soulful beats of house, and the gritty essence of hip-hop. This versatility ensures that every performance is a unique experience, taking the listener on a journey through the annals of music history, while also providing a glimpse into the future of electronic sound.

Moreover, Marco’s reverence for musical legends of the past, combined with his forward-loo- king approach, has solidified his position as a bridge between generations. He not only pays homage to the greats but also paves the way for emerging artists, showcasing their

He’s not just playing music; he’s weaving narratives, sharing stories, and above all, inspiring a global community to stay connected through the universal language of sound.

Take, for instance, his sentiments about genre confinement. “I know some techno producers that can make amazing house tracks,” Marco pointed out. However, he notes that many remain hesitant to explore outside their

fear of not being recognized in their primary genre. It’s a sentiment that not only underscores the challenges artists face but also reflects Marco’s commitment to unhindered expression. In his world, music transcends labels—it’s about evoking emotions, connecting with listeners, and charting unexplored territories.

Marco’s inclination towards unrestricted expression finds resonance in his admiration for

a DJ set that sets the stage, gauges the audience, and builds anticipation. While often sidelined, this part of a performance encapsulates Marco’s belief in the DJ’s role as not just a music player but a “musical selector”, someone attuned to the pulse of the audience, crafting an experience rather than just a playlist.

Reflecting on his roots, Marco attributes much of his musical evolution to his father’s vinyl collection. A nod to the classics like Neo Order and Imagination’s “Just an Illusion”
