However, he notes the evolving priorities within festival culture:

“Festivals have been instrumental in expanding electronic music, but many now prioritize com- mercial success over artistry. While they expose audiences to a broad spectrum of music, they of- ten favor mainstream acts over lesser-known ta- lents. Still, I return because these events foster an unparalleled energy and communal spirit.”

This take on festivals is brutally honest—what started as platforms for musical discovery are now largely dictated by profit-driven curation. Yet, his willingness to navigate both underground and commercial spaces without compromising his ar- tistry is what sets him apart. It’s a lesson for ar- tists striving to find balance in an industry that often forces them to choose between credibility and exposure.

BLACKFLAG RECORDINGS: A PLAT- FORM FOR ARTISTIC FREEDOM

At the core of Pullen’s career is Blackflag Recor- dings, a label built on artistic autonomy. Initia- lly, it was a way to bypass industry restrictions: “I started Blackflag when I was signed to a major label. I needed the freedom to release music on my own terms.”

Unlike many Detroit labels that focus solely on lo- cal artists, Blackflag takes a global approach:

“I didn’t want to be limited by the idea that a De- troit label should only release Detroit music. Ins- tead, I built a roster of artists who aligned with my vision, regardless of where they were from.”

His approach to running a label is refreshingly open-minded. While many Detroit artists em- phasize regionalism, he sees techno as a bor- derless movement. This perspective is crucial in an era where electronic music thrives on global cross-pollination. Blackflag’s success proves that staying true to one’s artistic principles doesn’t mean being confined to a singular identity—it means expanding the conversation.

“Longevity in this industry comes down to sta- ying true to your vision and never compromising on quality. For me, Blackflag went on hiatus for a few years because I became disillusioned with the music business after my major label deal. It left me feeling creatively stifled, and I needed time to rediscover my passion.”

“During that break, as I continued to travel and perform around the world, fans kept asking when I would bring the label back. It reminded me of the impact Blackflag had and why I started it in the first place.

From the beginning, my philosophy was always about releasing quality music—quality over quan- tity—and that remains my focus to this day.”

“For new artists, the key to building something that lasts is staying authentic and evolving natu- rally. Don’t chase trends; instead, focus on develo- ping your sound and identity. If you remain true to your artistic vision and consistently deliver quality work, you’ll carve out your own space in the indus- try.”

A LEGACY IN MOTION

From Detroit’s underground to the world’s most prestigious stages, Stacey Pullen continues to shape techno’s evolution. Through Blackflag Re- cordings, his electrifying performances, and his commitment to pushing creative boundaries, he remains a true innovator—uncompromising, vi- sionary, and always moving forward.

Staying connected to my creative source comes down to finding balance and building the right team. When I first started traveling and running the label, I did almost everything on my own, which was exhausting and left little room for creativity. But over time, I realized that to stay inspired and keep evolving, I needed space to think clearly and develop new ideas. Now, I surround myself with a team that helps manage the day-to-day, allowing me to focus on my artistry and vision. This balan- ce is crucial for staying creatively fulfilled.

For me, success isn’t just about fame or financial gain—it’s about maintaining my independence and staying true to who I am as an artist. It’s about having the freedom to make my own decisions, dictate my own pace, and live a creative lifestyle on my own terms. Looking back at my journey, one of the things I’m most proud of is sustaining my career while staying authentic to my roots. And, of course, achieving legendary status doesn’t hurt either—that’s just the cherry on top.

Pullen’s story shows the enduring power of Detroit techno. More than just a legendary DJ, he repre- sents a mindset—one that embraces change wi- thout sacrificing artistic integrity. His career ser- ves as both a history lesson and a blueprint for the future: evolve, but never lose sight of the essence that makes the music truly meaningful.
