EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Jean Pierre’s journey through music has been defined by constant reinvention. From his early days in New York to his years in Miami and Colombia, his recent move to Barcelona represents a deeper search for ar- tistic inspiration and growth. Driven by a desire to im- merse himself in a new environment, he’s found a fresh creative spark in Barcelona’s underground culture, res- haping his sound and approach. With a new album on the horizon and a commitment to supporting rising talent, Jean Pierre’s story is a testament to resilience, passion, and the ongoing evolution of his craft.

MOVING FROM MIAMI TO BARCELO- NA: A NEW CHAPTER

Relocating to Barcelona marks a transformative pe- riod for Jean Pierre, a DJ and producer whose career has spanned multiple cities and continents. Beyond music, his move represents a deep-seated desire for change, growth, and renewed inspiration. Having spent years in Miami, New York, and Colombia, his European experience was limited to summers in Ibiza. The deci- sion to fully immerse himself in Barcelona’s rich culture was driven by a longing for a deeper artistic connec- tion and a shift in pace.

“I wasn’t truly inspired anymore,” Jean Pierre admits. “I wanted an environment that would push me artistically, and Barcelona’s history and diverse venues have done exactly that. Since setting up my studio at La Mari- na, I’ve found myself finishing more music than ever. It’s been a refreshing shift, even though I still miss my friends and that Miami Beach vibe, especially during the winter.”

The transition from Miami’s sun-soaked, high-ener- gy scene to Barcelona’s deep, underground aesthetic has significantly reshaped his vision. While both cities have thriving electronic music cultures, they express them in distinctly different ways. For Jean Pierre, Bar- celona’s intricate underground spaces and historical richness provide a creative spark unlike any other.

THE INFLUENCE OF PLACE ON SOUND

Having built his career across multiple global hubs, Jean Pierre acknowledges the influence of each loca- tion on his music. However, he maintains that his core identity remains intact regardless of where he is.

“Each city has left a mark on my sound, but that NYC drive is always there. Connecting with producers from different regions constantly fuels my growth,”he exp- lains. “Music is a lifelong learning process, and every city carries a unique energy that shapes how I approach my craft.”

The concept of “home” is fluid for touring artists, and Jean Pierre reflects on the impact of a physical loca- tion on creative output.

“When I was younger, flying constantly and functioning on little sleep was manageable. But as I’ve grown, I rea- lize that having a stable home base is crucial for pro- ductivity. While making music on a plane or in a hotel is possible, nothing compares to the consistency and focus I achieve in my studio.”

UPCOMING RELEASES AND STUDIO WORK

Jean Pierre’s second studio album, set for release on Pakate Records in August, aligns with his milestone 40th birthday. Reflecting on his journey, he imagines what he would tell his younger self—the aspiring DJ who first started in New York:

“Stay strong, stay patient, and keep going. Push your- self to explore different sounds and embrace the cha- llenges. My first album with Nervous Records was a major breakthrough in NYC, back when CDs were still a thing. Today’s digital world presents new challenges, but the goal remains the same: create something ti- meless.”

His decision to release vinyl-only records through Me- lodie, distributed by Yoyaku, signals a deep apprecia- tion for the physical and tactile aspects of music.

“Vinyl has been part of my life since the beginning,” Jean Pierre shares. “I’m incredibly proud of Natalia Roth and her label, Melódie. She’s worked tirelessly to esta- blish it, and I’m honored to be part of these releases. Having a vinyl outlet backed by Yoyaku is the perfect way to kick off 2025. Stay tuned—these records will definitely make some noise.”

Another major upcoming project is his Miami Music Week VA compilation, featuring emerging talent from around the world. As someone who built his career from the ground up, Jean Pierre knows the importance of recognizing rising artists.

“For me, it starts with the music—100%. I have to feel it first before signing or releasing anything. Playing the records and seeing their impact on the dance floor is crucial. Over time, I also get to know the artists perso- nally, and having that hunger and dedication is key in this industry.”

The compilation includes tracks from artists like Za- moras, Mausa, Davide Mentesana, Natalia Roth, ACA, and Copasetic, among others.

“These artists bring something fresh to the table. This VA will showcase some incredible talent, and I’m exci- ted for people to hear it.”
