Una persona en particular fue mi amigo Derek, asistimos a algunas raves en Los Ángeles, Chicago y Minneapolis, pero en ese entonces realmente no había tantos en los Estados Unidos, así que fue difícil encontrarlos. Esa fue la razón por la que comencé a pinchar discos, extrañé el techno muchísimo, no era suficiente, y no había fies- tas en donde pincharan esa música, así que tuve que comenzar las mías. Nunca he pinchado otro género, el techno siempre ha sido mi amor verdadero.


¿Cómo describirías tu punto de vista sobre temas como la originalidad y la innovación frente a la perfec- ción y la atemporalidad en la escena techno?


Un poco de todo sería genial, pero siempre es un de- safío. Intento no centrarme mucho en esas cosas, porque me inhibe de disfrutar la música en la forma que es. Si comienzas a poner límites y hacer música por ra- zones forzadas estas se convertirán en algo tóxico para cada músico para la música en sí.


Siempre necesito mantener a la audiencia en movi- miento, y encontrar un buen mix para mí y para la músi- ca que toco y produzco. Cuando se trata de perfección, no es sencillo dejar ir, porque veo las cosas y soy dura conmigo misma. El esforzarse por la perfección puede enfermarte y privarte de disfrutar el placer de la música o lo que signifique. En los últimos años, he aprendido a relajarme y a no estresarme mucho por la perfección.


En el momento que iniciaste tus primeros pasos en la escena dance, la presencia femenina en los carteles no era tan fuerte como probablemente lo es ahora, ¿qué nos podrías decir ha sido la más grande lucha que has enfrentado en la industria con relación a la diversidad en line-ups?


Creo que fui muy afortunada en ese tiempo, no pien- so que realmente batallé con algo, pero recuerdo que no se me tomaba en serio porque era mujer, Pero por ello, aprendí algunas de las lecciones más grandes de mi vida, porque no hay mejor lugar para enfrentar algo cuando la gente te subestima.


Estoy muy contenta por ver a muchas chicas en tantos line ups, es algo bueno, pero aún no es suficiente. Dudo que sea por la falta de mujeres, solamente se necesita un poco más de educación en el tema para llegar a un nivel más igualitario.


Igualmente, siento que a menudo se considera que las mujeres tienen otras prioridades en la vida y no en su carrera, esa es la naturaleza de como las cosas nos han llevado hasta donde estamos. Los hombres pueden concentrarse en sus carreras, sin embargo, las mujeres seguido tienen que decidir si quieren familia o no. Esto es un gran punto de partida para muchas, donde mu- chas de nosotras no podemos viajar y tenemos que parar los tours, es triste pero cierto. Creo que muchas grandes carreras han potencialmente culminado porque es muy difícil llevar una familia como la vida del DJ..


¿Qué pueden aprender los artistas de tu historia?


¡Qué hagan lo que aman! No hay límites, pero deben decidir como quieren vivir su vida, porque salir de gira no es fácil. A veces me ha tocado que tengo que via- jar por 30 horas tan solo para llegar de un escenario a otro. A veces no duermes y tienes que ir directamente al avión para poder llegar a la fiesta, y dar siempre el 130% cuando pinchas.


Sin embargo, necesitas estar vorazmente hambriento por ese gig, que tanto como tú como los fans han espe- rado por tanto tiempo, esa es la única razón que cuenta, necesitas amarlo.

How would you describe your views on matters like originality and innovation versus perfection and time- lessness in the techno scene? Are you interested in creating the music of the future or continuing with a traditional sound?


A bit of everything would be nice but it´s always chal- lenging. I try not to focus too much on those things, be- cause it inhibits me from enjoying music the way it is. If you start making borders and make music out of forced reasons this will become toxic for every musician and for the music itself. You never know what drives the crowd crazy until you try it and you sometimes get the biggest surprises on stage.


I always need to keep the crowd moving and I found a good mix for myself and for the music I play and produce. When it comes to perfection, it´s not easy to let go, be- cause I see things and I am hard on myself. To strive for perfection in every single way can make you sick and restrict yourself of enjoying the pleasure of the music or what it stands for. In the last few years I have learned to chill out not to stress too much about perfection.


By the time you started your first steps into the dance scene, the female presence in the line ups was not as strong as it is probably now. What can you tell us has been the biggest struggle you faced in the industry re- garding diversity in the line-ups?


I think I was lucky back in the days and I didn´t real- ly struggle with bigger things, but I remember not been taken so serious, cause of being a woman. But because of that I´ve learned some of my best life lessons, as there is no better position to be faced with when people underestimate you. I am happy to see so many line ups with female DJs, it’s only a good thing but there is still not enough. Whether that's a lack of females to choose from, I doubt it, but it will just take a little more educating to get to a level where its more equal. Also, I feel like women are often considered to have other life priorities, and not their ca- reer. It is the nature of how things have led us to where we are.


Men can concentrate on their career, but woman often have to decide one day, if they want to have a family or not. This is a huge turning point for many, where a lot of woman can´t travel anymore and have to stop touring. It’s sad but true, and I think that many amazing careers have potentially ended because it's a hard job to man- age children as well as a DJ career.


What can a new artist learn from your story?


Do what you love. There are no borders, but you must decide how you want to live your life, because touring is not easy. Sometimes it takes me more than 30 hours of traveling, just to get to one stage. Sometimes you have no sleep and have to go straight to the plane from the party. But you always need to give 130% when you perform. Nevertheless, you need to be hungry for that gig you and your fans were waiting for a long time and that´s the only reason that counts. You need to love it.
