Small school with a big heart raises cash for good causes
During the last term, pupils at St Mary’s RC Primary School, Osbaldeston, showed how much they think about others by organising not one, but two fund-raising events. The first of these was a special “fun afternoon” planned and rim entirely by the older children in the school. The sum of £200waspresented to The Stroke Association following
the event. The whole school then joined in with a sponsored “Readathon” and together read a total of over 750 books! This magnificent effort raised over £900 in aid of Macmillan Can cer Care. A cheque was presented to Seb Farnell on behalf of Macmillan and the money will be used to support over 40 people in the local area.
Ribble Valley’s Conserva tive MP Nigel Evans has ex pressed his disappointment at the poor turnout in last Thursday’s local elections and called for the extension of voting to the days before traditional polling day. From results declared by
early last Friday afternoon, turnout (the percentage of eligible voter who actu ally cast their vote) was on ly around 36%, compared to 42% in 2011 and 39.2% in 2009. In a letter to Deputy
Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who is responsible for elec toral and constitutional poli cy, Mr Evans wrote: “Despite the national media running with gains for UKIP as the main story of the day, I am far more concerned about the poor turnout in these elections. “I am writing to suggest
the introduction of a four- day polling station to be opened at'each town hall from theSunday beforepoll ing day, with the retention of
