seen recent success, with its second team winning promo tion and its first team devel oping well through the season

Clitheroe Rugby Club has

just ended. Now the club is commit

ted to building on this suc cess through events like the Touch Series, to bring more

people into the game of rugby in general. It is recognised that sur

prisingly few people are aware that there is a very active rug by club in the town, despite it being formed in 1977 and be ing resident at Littlemoor for more than 35 years.

That said, rather than hav

ing the sessions at Littlemoor, the club have kindly been giv-

en permission by Ribble Val ley Borough Council to use the

Castle Field in the belief that it will make the sessions much

more accessible and allow people to just turn up and play. A spokesman for the club

commented: “You can pick up the rules in a matter of five

minutes and we will be split ting up the experienced and the not-so-experienced to en sure everyone gets good com petition, as well ensuring we have people to help everyone out on the night. “Simply consider the

weather then just bring along the sort of kit you might wear

to the gym, or ifyou were going out for a run. “Everyone will get a warm

welcome at Touch Series ses sions, even if you come along

on your own. “They’re planned to be so ciable and inclusive and the

perfect opportunity to run out with old friends or to make

new ones, whilst getting fit in the process. Goon, giveitago.” If you are interested in go

ing along or just want to find out more, either just turn up on the night or email touch@ clitheroerugby.com. You can also find out more on Face- book under Clitheroe Touch Rugby or on Twitter @clithe- roerugby

Fancy a brush with Borough’s ‘dementia’friendly’ bid

Ribble Valley Borough Coun cil has joined forces with Clitheroe solicitors Chenery Maher to launch an identity

. capsule scheme for people with dementia and Alzheim-

: er’s disease. The capsules, which con

tain crucial information on the bearer, including the con tact details of carers or next of kin, are available free of charge to those with demen tia and their families. It is the latest initiative in

the borough’s bid to become the country’s first dementia- friendly community. Ribble Valley Borough

Council has joined forces with the Alzheimer’s Society and several local business es, community groups and public and private sector organisations to establish the borough as a centre of excel lence in dementia awareness. A network of “dementia

friends” has been established throughout the borough and council staff are to receive training in dementia aware ness. Ribble Valley Borough Council’s .older people’s champion, Sue Bibby, said: “Dementia sufferers face bar riers when trying to contin ue with ordinaryiife, such as shopping, using public trans-

cil to make these identity cap sules available.”

m to Paris for cancer by Eric Beard sworth

Teacher Andy Carson sets off tomorrow on a London-to- Paris cycling challenge in honour ofacolleague who died of cancer.

Andy, head of Year 7 at Clithe roe Royal Grammar School, is doing the 234-mile trek in memory of his friend and colleague Rachel Ambler, who lost her 18-month battle with cancer earlier this year. Mother-of-two Rachel,

who taught English, was diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring of 2012, and de spite undergoing a mastec tomy, radiotherapy and two different kinds of chemother apy, the disease spread to her bones, liver and brain. She passed away in January

only a few days after her 40th birthday.

Keen cyclist Andy (45), a

teacher at CRGS for 20 years, said: “Rachel was an inspi rational person and a great teacher who was loved and

respected by colleagues and students alike. “I wanted to do something

extra special in her memory and raise money for a chari ty that helped and supported herandher family and friends during such a difficult time.” Andy will set o f f from

Trafalgar Square tomorrow and pedal for three days and through two countries to the finish at Notre Dame. He added: “I enjoy cycling

but I’ve only done 100 miles at the most at one time, so this is a big undertaking, but one I’m looking forward to. “To get in shape for the ride,

I’ve had to put in a lot of hours training which has meant being away from my twin babies, so both my wife and I wanted this to be a notable challenge for a truly worth while cause.” Andy is riding for the Rose-

mere Cancer Foundation, which helps provide the best care possible for cancer pa tients in Lancashire and South Cumbria. • You can support Andy at
