What qualifications do you need? ACCA (Certified Accountant) or ICAEW (Chartered Ac­ countant). There are other public qualifications but these are the main two to work in an accountancy practice.


How long does i t take to qualify for the role? There are 14 ACCA exams. You need 36 months’ experience in a relevant role. You can take up to three exams each time which are six months apart


What starting salary and package can you expect? Probably about £12,000 to


£14,000 in Lancashire for a trainee accountant depend­ ent on previous experience and qualifications.


What personal skills make someone best suited? You are very much involved in visiting clients in tasks such as auditing so interpersonal skills are essential, network­ ing building your contac ts is a fruitful and enjoyable key attribute o f being a business advisor. Obviously strong nu­ merical aptitude is handy, but not the be all and end all, good analytical thinking and seeing the bigger picture is an invalu­ able technique.


What career prospects and structure is there? Working in practise the ulti-


■ mate goal is becoming a part­ ner at your own firm, which allows you the variety to work with a lot of business owners across a wide sector of indus­ tries and trades. There is also the option to switch to become a financial controller at a indi­ vidual company in any indus­ try or sector and becoming a key cog in the management team supplying important financial information to the directors. Many financial con­ trollers are directors as there input is so key to the running of the company.

their Spring Open, sponsored by Oak Hill Spa.


The Stableford competition was won, with 89 points, by Ju­ lie Stephenson,Bridget Rees, Leslie Lohou and Agnes Flana­ gan from Maureen Board, Jean Sanderson, Linda Rhodes and Marilyn Bulcock with 85. In third place after a three-


tie card play-off with 82 points was Jennifer Eastwood, Sue Madden, Trish Bradley and Agnes Seery.

action again, competing for the Chaiman’s Rosebowl, with Laura Cannan taking the hon­ ours in this board competition with 104-29-75. The best gross went to Linda Ashworth with a score of 88, nearest the pin was won by Janice Bufton ' and longest drive by Janette Dowdy. The men competed for the
