i i w > • Dangers that lurk in toys and hols & EARTWORM and lungworm in
dogs have both been very topical in recent times. Lungworm (Angiostrongylus
vasorum) is increasingly being seen in the UK, particularly Southern England and Wales, and is spreading north. It is a potentially fatal disease of dogs,
which become infected by eating infected slugs, snails and frogs. This includes tiny slugs that are often found in outside water bowls and on play toys left in the garden overnight. The worms
quickly spread to the heart and blood vessels supplying the lungs, causing heart and lung problems such as coughing, tiredness and breathing difficulties. Soon, the adults produce larvae which cause much more serious blood clotting disorders. Treatment and prevention is easy with
an appropriate wormer or spot on, so please consult your vet. Always clean toys left outside overnight, and clean up dog and fox poo as this infects the slugs and snails.
Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is not
endemic in the UK. It is seen in warmer climates, such as Southern Europe and
is spread by mosquitos. Dogs that travel abroad from the UK on a PETS passport, or imported dogs, are at risk. They can also infect cats and ferrets, although to a
. lesser extent. The tiny worm larvae get into the
dog's blood stream from mosquito bites,
passing to the heart and pulmonary arteries. There, the larvae become
:adults producing more tiny larvae, which circulate throughout the bloodstream from where they are picked up by other feeding mosquitoes ... and so the cycle continues. Signs of infection are often associated with heart failure
!
such as lethargy, coughing, fainting, breathing problems and an enlarged abdomen. Infection is often fatal as the disease is often very advanced
by the time it is detected. This is because of the irreversible heart
changes seen and the risks associated with removing the large adult worms from the heart.
Prevention and early treatment of
the small worm larvae is very easy with frequent use of an appropriate wormer and mosquito
control. This is essential before taking your dog abroad, while you - are away and for at least a month after your return; please ask your vet.
