A Sabden mother-of-two has spoken of her incredible experience visiting North Korea along with just a hand
ful of Brits invited to run a marathon in the reclusive state.
MerielWoodward (41) was one ofjust 40 foreigners invited to
join in the 26-mile run in the nation’s capital Pyongyang. It is the first time the rul
ing regime has opened up the marathon to outsiders in the secretive totalitarian country rulebyKimJong-un Meriel, who works for
East Lancashire firm Sena tor, ran the race around the Pyongyang, which finished in front of 80,000 spectators at the city’s stadium. She said: “It was absolutely
amazing. We did four laps of the city and we had children and grannies cheering us on and shouting‘England’.” She completed the race in
four hours and 15 minutes and has raised around £2,000 for a cancer charity. She was inspired to take on

Grylls book I just decided to do it. It was the first time the foreigners have been able to take part in the marathon.”

Veteran of Alamein, Col Jeffery dies, 92
A military veteran who had fought at El Alamein, Colo nel Michael Jeffery, has died in Clitheroe Hospital after a short illness, aged 92. After a distinguished

joined the Territorial Army in May, 1938, with the Royal Tank Regiment, and was mo bilised at the outbreak of the Second World War in Sep tember 1939. Commissioned ini94i into
the 2nd Royal Gloucester shire Hussars, he fought in the Western Desert as a troop leader in Montgomery’s Eighth Army- “The Desert Rats” - and served in the no table 1942 Allied victory at El Alamein. He was later trans ferred to the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry, serving in Italy. After the war, he con
tinued in the Royal Tank Regiment, becoming its reg-

In the 1970s and 80s he commanded the Army Cadet Force in West Lancashire and later Mersey- side.He was chairman of the Eighth Army Veterans' As sociation from 1979 to 1996 and returned with veterans to the battle scenes in Egypt and Libya. Colonel Jeffery had lived
at Chipping with first wife, Dorothy, who died in 1979, and in 1981 he married second wife Margery. They
lived at Beechthorpe, Wad- dington.

and was a memb er of Clithe roe Bridge Club. In tribute, his good friend
and military historian Mr George Forty said: “His booming laugh and ability to fill a room with his bonhomie, good humour and zest for life, made him a large-than- life character who could never be ignored.” A private family funeral
is being held at Richmond, North Yorkshire, next week, and there will be a service of thanksgiving for his life at St Helen’s Church, Wadding- ton, at noon on Thursday June 5th. Colonel Jeffery is survived
by wife Margery, daughters Sue and Sally, stepdaughter Annabel and stepson Martin. The family have request
ed no flowers, but donations instead to the Army Benev olent Fund, c/o Annabel Dixon, Beechthorpe, Wad- dington.
