A group of scuba divers from Clitheroe are in training for an underwater five-mile relay challenge at Coniston Water in memory of one of their club members. It will be the second spon
sored charity challenge or ganised by the Ribble Valley branch of the British Sub-Aq ua Club (BSAC) to remember Duncan Priestley, of Accring ton, who died from cancer in August 2013 at just 59. Buddy pairs of scuba divers
will use a relay system to cover the five-and-a-half mile Lake District site underwater on Sunday July 13th and their aim is to raise a boat load of
cashforlifeboatcharityRNLI. Lastyearclub members raised
more than £2,200 for Pend leside Hospice in Duncan’s memory after taking on what Fiona Imlach, the club’s train ing officer, describes as a few silly underwater challenges. Fiona said: “It’s going to be
quite a job scuba diving the length of Coniston underwa ter. We will be doing it in bud dy pairs with divers keeping to a depth ofsix metres (20ft). “The buddy pair will use a compass and trail a surface
markerbuoysothesafetycrew knows exactly where they are. In fact, we will have two RIBS
Advertiser and 1 imes 'ih tf C U tb e rw / p (rigid inflatable boats), with
thesecondoneferryingthe next pair of divers.” Fiona added: “Duncan
Priestley was one of the club’s most active mem bers and a hugely popular guy who was always up for a laugh. That’s why last year we decided to do ’silly’ things underwater to raise money for Pendleside Hospice, where he spent his last days. “The hospice was fantas
tic and even arranged for him to marry his partner, Joan, which was very kind of them. “Last year we did all sorts
ofsponsored silly things, such as holding an underwater gym session, playing underwater draughts, one diver wrote 100 lines, one ate as many differ ent fruits as possible and one munched his way through a pile of sausages! “We were thrilled with the
amount we raised and decid ed, as a club, to continuefund- raising and make it an annual event in Duncan’s memory with a different charity ben efiting each year. “This year we have chosen the RNLI, notjust in Duncan’s
memory but also to remember all our previous diving bud dies that are no longer with us. We have been running

training dives to make sure everyone involved is up to the challenge. There will be seven pairs of buddy divers plus six non-diving team members at the surface.
“It’s important we have
worked out the logistics and ensure the safety of everyone taking part. It will be quite a strenuous challenge and we can’t decide on which end of Coniston we will start, as it will all depend on wind direc tion on the day.” The Ribble Valley branch is part of the UK’s national gov
erning body forscuba diving- BSAC - which is made up of 120 dive centres and 1,000-plus family friendly and sociable clubs, run by volunteers, up and down the country and abroad.
It represents more than
30,000 scuba divers and snor- kellers and welcomes new members from complete be ginners upwards, including those who have trained with other agencies. BSAC Chief Executive,
• Mary Tetley, said: “BSAC is made up of lots of clubs like
the Ribble Valley, where fan tastic friendships are made thanks to members’ passion for their sport. “It’s lovely to hear how
Ribble Valley are remember ing their friend Duncan and the valued work he did for the
club.Itsounds like they arego- ing to a lot of trouble to ensure the event at Coniston Water will be a safe and successful, if unconventional dive, and I wish them all the best with their fundraising.” Fiona added that Ribble
Valley Sub Aqua Club is keen to recruit new members and can offer potential new divers the opportunity to give the sport a try.
“People think scuba diving
is an expensive sport, but it re ally isn’t, and at Ribble Valley we supply all the equipment a new diver needs for the first year to make it that bit easier. “Membership fees for the
first year are £225 and that includes all training and full scuba kit rental for a year. It gives people the chance to get their own dive equipment over time without having to splash out right at the start. “It’s a really sociable club,
we meet every Thursday at 9pm at Clitheroe Conserva tive Club. We currently have
around 34 members from all walks of life, with around 20 actively diving on a regular " basis. We are blessed with nu merous in-house instructors including national instruc tors.
y “Members have a range
of qualifications from BSAC Ocean Divers to BSAC First Class Divers. We can accept new members from aged 14, although anyone under-18 needs to be accompanied by an adult.
when it comes to our dive pro gramme and are normally out diving most weekends. We go up to Scotland and the Shet- lands quite regularly as well- ' as the east coast, Anglesey and the North Wales coast. We al so have a club trip to Norway
plannedfornextyearwhilewe enjoyed a trip to Cape Verde last November. It really is a
fantastic sport and a friendly © club. Fiona, who runs her own
renewable energy and boiler business, said: “Anyone who would like to give what is a fantastic sport a try should contact us through our club - website.” To find out more visit www.
