Francophiles mean business - and more

This year’s AGM for Le Cercle Frangais De Ribblesdale was not just an evening of busi ness. It included the usual re

view of the past year, but also sought suggestions from members of events for next year’s programme. These included a repeat

of last year’s musical evening with Mike and Mike, a treas ure hunt, ameal chez Christie and a games evening to start the new season in September.

The group also took the

opportunity to celebrate a number of members’ birth days, with gateaux to add to the evening’s enjoyment. After the business, the

.group watched the “Les Grand Guignols” TV programme - the French equivalent of “Spit- ting Image”. The next meeting will be

on Monday, June 9th, and will be a soiree chez Christie. You can book through the website www.cerclefribblesdale.co.uk

The multi-award winning Stirk House Hotel, Gisburn, has gained another ac- ■ colade, the gold standard award from - the Green Tourism Programme.

It is an outstanding achievement for an entry level business to the scheme and a credit to everyone at the hotel, but es pecially its “green champion” and head chef Chris Dobson. His commitment to ensuring the

hotel can become as environmentally sustainable as possible was highlight ed when the assessor reported: “There is an extremely strong focus on local, seasonal produce and this is reflected in the menu, which changes on a daily basis. . “This ethos carries onto the break

such difficulties as heating and light ing an old building sustainably, the gold award speaks volumes for all the posi tive work and effort that has been done thus far and indeed continues to be car- ried out within the hotel. It was a wonderfully warm and sunny evening when members of Bolland Garden ing Club gathered at Holden Clough Nursery for a guided tour and talk by proprietor Mr John Foley. He explained the ex

pansion plan,'which since 2009,has transformed the nursery. For example, more than 5,000 tons of earth have been dug out in order to cre ate the new car parking ar: ea, which is surrounded by raised beds. This is to allow • the display of plants in-situ and to lessen the impact of. cars parked within the area..; John explained that in one

Most of the display beds were topped with bark, which helps to preventweedgrowthbecause it sterilises the surface area making the beds much easier to maintain as seeds are far less able to germinate. Members were shown a

covered “green” polytunnel in which trees and shrubs were 'protected from sun and rain whilst they are in pots plus a further “white” polytunnel, which is used to bring on the growth of particular plants

for shows and displays. If plants are forging ahead too quickly they are taken to the bottom garden area to slow them down because, as John explained, just for Tatton Park Show approximately 10,000 plants are needed - 3.000 for the display and about7,oooforsale! The show display has to

lets. John recommended the application of a small but

widespread amount in Feb ruary to dispense with the early arrivals, as this helped prevent their egg-laying ac tivities which then reduced the invasion later in spring and summer. Refreshments were

served after the tour, with much discussion on the many subjects John had covered. A vote of thanks was given by Mrs Jacky Frankland. The next meeting is on
