When Stephen Fry, the actor, recommended Jon Gomm onTwitterwith one word- “wow” - it sparked a bare knuckle rollercoaster ride for the Blackpool guitar master. Fry’s tweet to his legion

of online followers saw Go- mm’s single, “Passionflower”, viewed millions of times on YouTube while an American magazine described him as the “future of acoustic guitar playing”. No pressure there then for

the Red Rose guitarist, whose parents were both journal ists on the town’s newspaper, and who is back on home turf again following a global tour. “My previous life - of driv ing from my home to Vienna to

play a concert - has suddenly changed dramatically,” said Gomm, who performs at The Grand, Clitheroe next Thurs day, May 29th. “It’s been crazy, but I felt

lucky enough before, just be ing able to make my living as a musician, so anything more is a bonus. Since that one word recommendation from Fry, who is Mr Twitter really, I’ve beeninvitedontoNationalTV in Turkey, Portugal, Holland and Germany, and I’ve toured in Africa, China and South America.” Gomm, who refused a

place at Oxford University to pursue his music, slept on so fas and the floors of people’s houses asheregularlyclocked up a marathon 250 gigs a year. “I did a gig in a car park in

Barnsley - but that’s pretty normal,” joked Gomm. “I’ve played some weird gigs I can tell you. I headlined the Acous

tic Gathering Festival on a boating lake in Scarborough. The stage was on an island, so I had to pedal across thelake on aswanshapedpedalowithmy guitar strapped on my back. “Ipaidmy way through gui

tar school by playing in cafes and pubs -and I even did afew countrymusicgigsinworking men’s clubs for line-dancers.” Part of that is his independ

ence and refusal to sign for a major label and his willing ness to work with independ ent promoters in rural venues and theatres instead of play ing chain venues and corpo rate festivals. Yet, despite his international success, he re mains far from a household name in this country. “I’m not bothered about signing for a big label, it

doesn’t interest me - who can get excited about a mass mar ket product.” Much ofhis appeal is down

to Gomm’s rare ability not on ly to play the guitar, but to detune and retune it while playing, and hit different parts of the guitar’s body to produce the sounds of a percussion section. Gomm, who started play

ing ukulele at the age of two and took classical guitar les sons a couple ofyears later, is a disciple of American compos er and guitarist Michael Hedg es. The tattoo on his right arm is from the cover of Hedges’ al bum “Oracle”. “Michael Hedges is an im-

portantsourceofinspiration, but I draw on influences from far and wide, and there’s blues, soul and rock and even a bit of metal in there.” ® Jon Gomm, Thursday -

May 29th, (£15 adv. ticket), The Grand, Clitheroe (Ticket hotline: 01200 421599 / www. thegrandvenue.co.uk). With support from Baxter Rhodes.
