Robert and Amanda Parker, owners of Browsholme Hall, will open their historic gar­ dens every to visitors free of charge every Wednesday. It was in the late 18th cen­ tury that Thomas Lister Parker was inspired by the innovative style of Capabil­ ity Brown to create the 20


. acres of gardens and park­ land which today form the setting for the historic hall. The work included the crea­ tion of a three acre lake, plus an “eyecatcher” in the form ofan arch from Ingleton Hall, built as a new entrance so that visitors could ap­ proach the hall by a long drive, through woodland, catching tantalising glimps­ es of the house. The later Edwardian garden of lowboxhedges, roses, rhododendrons, small ponds and rockeries reintro­ duced a lost formality of an earlier garden to the house, but by 1975 this had all but disappeared into the under­ growth. Over the past 35 years the current generation of the Parker Family have done much to recover a garden and landscape lost to nature. Plans for more ambitious restoration projects are now underway to restore
