‘Seb’ snaps it up on new TV show

byDuncanSmith duncan.smltli1@jpress.co.uk Twitter @clithadvertiser

A Clitheroe wheeler-dealer and hisfamily feature in a new BBC1 TV series which begins this week.

Daniel Sebastian is a well- known character on the Lan cashire auctions and saleroom

• circuit, known tomostsimply as “Seb”. Tall, slim anddapper, with aglintinggold tooth, styl ish shades and a distinctive Afro hairstyle, Seb is hard to miss and instantly likeable. He talks the talk and walks

the walk of an experienced wheeler-dealer, and under the surface sheen he clearly knows his stuff, with an eye for a bargain that he knows he can sell on at a tidy profit. All of this is what attract

ed the producers of “Del Boys and Dealers”, a new se ries of four 6o-minute pro grammes scheduled for 9 pm on Wednesdays. Although it started this week, Seb is fea tured mostly in the final two episodes, scheduled for trans mission on June 4th and 11th. MadebyRDFTelevisionfor

the BBC, the series was com missioned on the back of a successful one-off documen tary- “Wheelers, Dealers and Del Boys” - which aired last summer. It focussed on South London’s real-life “Trotters” as they ducked and dived their way to‘a dreamed-of fortune. , The new series casts the

net wider, following dealers in other parts of the country as they try to make cash from cast-offs and search for the hidden gems that could make them a mint. Seb’s masterplan is bril

liantly simple. He buys wisely in the north, using all his ac cumulated knowledge to spot a bargain, then takes his hoard south to sell on at fairs, sales and to a network o f estab lished customers. It is know ing what his customers want that is the key to Seb’s success. Some are private buyers, but others are window and set

Adrian has his feet firmly on the ground!

A Simonstone podiatrist is stepping up for his toughest challenge yet - taking on a climb four times higher than Mount Everest. Adrian Clark is bidding

to tackle all 214 peaks in Alfred Wainwright’s famous fellwalkingbook“APictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells”. The 48-year-old, who

runs AP Chiropodist and Po diatrists, Padiham, will walk 430 miles and climb a total of 126,000ft in the gruelling charity challenge. Incredibly, Adrian is hop

dressers and interior design ers looking for a particular, distinctive or unique piece. Something that looks to

most people like it’s only fit for the bonfire could be the “dis tressed” piece that a designer is seeking, and it is knowing that which separates Seb from the rest. He counts among his customers such illustrious names as Tommy Hilfiger, Fat Face and AllSaints. He is also getting more into selling on line through his own website - www.afrojunk.co.uk His hectic lifestyle means

Seb splits his time between his family life in Clitheroe and travelling the country in his eyecatching van, bearing his “afrojunk” logo and a graf fiti-style image of his own face. His family are wife Jo and

children Grace, Lilly and Kio na, who live in West View. Jo is no stranger to a bit ofwheeler- dealing herself and, in fact, the couple met at an auction. The TV cameras came to

ClitheroejustbeforewCHrist- mas, following Seb as he jug gled the everyday demands of family life with rushing to auctions to snap up good finds then heading off down south in search of a profit. Luckily for Seb, his favour

ite haunt is right on his door step - Silverwoods auction house on Lincoln Way, at the edge of Clitheroe. Its weekly Rediscovery sales on Wednes days are his bread and butter, with around 450 lots going un der the hammer each week,

Seb with Joand children Grace Lilly and Kiona next to his distinctive van. everything from furniture to

jewellery to lighting and pic tures and counties “boxes of mixed items”, any one of them potentially containing that special and lucrative find. In fact it was Silverwoods

who came to Seb’s aid when the producers of the TV show put a proposal to him. They wanted one of their featured dealers to stage their own auc tion, and persuaded fast-talk ing Seb he was the manfor the job.

He turned for advice and

tips to Silverwoods’ seasoned auctioneer Wilf Mould, who knows all there is to know about wielding the hammer. There were tips too from Jere my Greenhalgh, livestock auc tioneer at Clitheroe Auction Mart, just next door, allfilmed for “Del Boys and Dealers”. Sil verwoods even provided the lot number tickets and other equipment for Seb’s auction. “It was fantastic, it’s defi

nitely something I’d do again,” said'Seb. “When they first asked me to do an auction I wasn’t sure, because I usual ly sell at fairs or direct to my clients, or on the internet. So I thought ‘if I’m going to do it I’ve got to get some advice’ and Silverwoods were brilliant, they really helped me.” Pinning down Seb for a

quote during Silverwoods’ weekly sale is no easy thing, as he constantly has one eye on the sale catalogue in his hand and one ear on auctioneer Wilf, making sure he doesn’t ' miss the next lot that has caught his eye. With a quick “excuse me” he’s off and a few subtle nods to Wilflaterhe has bought a retro chic ’70s star- burst mirror in silver, for £18 plus commission. “That’s a good buy for un

der twenty quid,” he confides, adding that he already has a buyer in mind. How much will he sell it for? Well, that’s Seb’s business. • “Del Boys and Dealers”

is on Wednesdays on BBCi at 9 pm. For more about Silver- woods full range of auctions in Clitheroe, including the weeklyRediscoverysales, visit www.silverwoods.co.uk

marathon event to raise funds which will go to the Moelfre RNLI lifeboat sta tion £100,000 appeal fund in Wales. Adrian said: “On aver

age a completer would take around 10 years to tick off all 214 Wainwright peaks. “I decided to set myself a

target of 10 months, begin ning August 22nd last year. “Luckily, it’s been a rea

cents. I hope to raise £1,000 towards the Moelfre RNLI £iook appeal for the newme- chanics workshop within the brand new lifeboat station. “I have been a lifelong

supporter of the lifesaving charity and over the years have become good friends with the volunteer lifeboat crew at Moelfre on the isle of Anglesey. I really do admire the vital lifesaving work they all do and I am committed to raising as much money for their worthy cause as lean.’ Adrian is no stranger to

physical challenges as in recent years he has complet ed the Meriai Straights swim, the 125-mile Anglesey Coast al Path and the Wainwright

Coast to Coast Walk all in aid of Moelfre RNLI lifeboat sta tion. The lifeboat station’s vol

unteer press officer, Dave Massey, said: “What Adri an is attempting is truly re markable and over the past fewyears he has raised thou sands of pounds for the Moel fre RNLI lifeboat station. “As a volunteer RNLI life

boat crew we are all over whelmed by his dedication, enthusiasm and generosity. All the vital money raised by Adrian from this unbelieva ble feat will go directly to the lifeboat station appeal.” •
