EVERYONE wants to go to Wemb ley. Players dream of playing, and fans dream of following their favourites to the home of English football. The pupils a t Rowland High

School are no different, which is why they’re hoping their number one foot- ball-plajdng teacher Mr Keefe wins this weekend. Anthony Keefe is Head of PE at

the Grindleton school during the day. But in his spare time, away from

his job and young family, he plays left back for Kirkham and Wesham, who are just 180 minutes away from that big trip to London for this year’s FA VaseRnal. It’s been a long road for the Vodkat

North West Counties League Second Division newcomers to reach Satur day’s home semi-final first leg against Suffolk-based Needham Market in the prestigious competition. • Having just joined the Vodkat

League, the lowest rung for entry into the Vase, Kirkham were very much imderdogs from the start. But, having won cups in the past

and finished league champions more than once in the West Lancashire League, Keefe is confident they can go all the way: “We’ve played eight games to get to this stage, it’s our f c t season in the North West Counties and we had to come through the pre-' liminary rounds.

pupils ready “Wembley at the start was just a

dream, but with each game i t ’s become more and more realistic, and we’ve had some great wins on the way. “The best ones were the 5-2 win at

Newcastle Benfield in the third round, and the 2-0 win at Crowbor- ough Athletic in the fifth, as they were second favourites to win the competition.” In the quarter-final, Kirkham beat

Coventry Sphinx 1-0 in a replay, after the first game ended 3-3, thanks to a late injury-time equaliser from the Wharton-based side I t was the club’s biggest game to

date, and a fantastic experience for Keefe and his team-mates. “The build up was fantastic and we

had nearly 1,100 fans on, which is a record at our new ground,” he said. “They underestimated us, and it

proved a real cat and mouse game, they got their tails up, but we pulled it back. “We were always confident we

could turn it around at their place. Conditions were horrendous, but we defended really well and the lads are made up.” He added: “We were lucky enough

to use Blackburn Rovers’ first team coach, which was that bit different,- with their emblem on the front. “We’re used to crowds of 100 to 200

fans, so to play in front of so many has been a fantastic experienca”

New golf season starts in style

NEW Mytton Fold captain Gariy Davies held his nerve under the criti cal eyes of some 80 members and managed to drive the green on the par-three opening hole. Both days were a huge success, the

weather staying fine and the course was in excellent condition, despite the terrible weather of recent weeks. John Bary and Steve James won the

Captain’s Drive-In competition ahead of the Paul Conchie-Dave Pennington and Frank Hindle-John Kwas pairings. Spot prizes were won by Jan Van Boekel, Chris Chadwick, Dave Bolton, John Berry and Peter Tomlinson. Roxana Clark emerged as the win

ner of Linda Clegg’s Lady Captain’s Drive In ahead of Emma Clegg and Maureen Board. Patricia Leyland won the prize for

CLITHEROE have been boost ed ahead of tomorrow’s game at Lancaster City by the news that on-loan centre half Jonathan Smith will remain a Blue until the end of the season. Having had his loan spell

twice extended, Fleetwood have agreed that the former Accring ton Stanley man can now see out the remaining eight games. Smith has been a big addition

to the side, his presence felt at either end of the pitch due to his faultless heading ability. The Fylde coast side have put

a 24-hour recall on the defender should they desperately need him back, but Clitheroe co-man ager Neil Reynolds sees him as Blue through and through. He said: “We’ve done a deal

with Fleetwood th a t will see Jonathan with us for every game until the end of the season unless he’s needed. He’s on 24-hour recall, but as far as we’re con cerned he’s a Clitheroe player until we hear otherwisa” However, Smith will be with

out regular partner Russ Clarke at The Giant Axe as his fellow centre half sits out a one game ban for his dismissal against Skelmersdale two weeks ago, but Ian Flannery should come in for him, having successfully come through six training sessions since his knee injury. Clitheroe will be without John

Osborne tomorrow, as well as Monday’s match a t home to Bradford Park Avenue, as he sits out the first game of a three- match suspension. However, brother Paul is on

the mend from a hamstring injury, and, at the other end of the pitch, Sam Heap is champing

mm 124. Keefe, who has taught at Rowland

for seven years, will be hoping for another big crowd at Kirkham on Saturday, and with the whole school behind him, he knows he’ll have his

.own section of fans should they get to Wembley in May. “The pupils have taken a massive

interest in the team, and they all want to organise a coach to come down and watch us,” said the 31- year-old defender. “I ’m the only teacher in the side,

one of the lads is a lecturer at Black- bum College, but I ’ve probably got the biggest fan base.”

at the bit to get involved. Clitheroe are currently

boosts Blues

enjoying their best form of the season following Satur day’s third successive victory, and Reynolds aims to contin ue the run over a challenging Easter weekend. He said: “I t ’s going really

well but now is not the time to get complacent. We didn’t play as well as we have done, but it was nice to ground out a 1-0 result (against Bridlington). • “As a unit we’re looking

solid. Three wins in a row, one defeat in seven, undefeat ed in four, whichever way you look a t it, we’re in a good place at the moment. “I just want to carry on

and put markers out for next season. We’ve got the top four sides to play again, and they won’t want to face us. I t ’s just a pity we’re not up there with them.” Looking back to Saturday against Bridlington,

Reynolds praised man-of- th.e-match Adam Kozlowski and the efforts of grounds man Keith Lord to get the game on. He added: “We will play

teams where the pitch is heavy and the middle four can’t pass the ball the way they want to. It wasn’t Ryan Fisher or Gary Stopforth’s game, which is why Adam Kozlowski came in. “Adam gets a special men

tion as man-of-the-match. His attitude has been out standing, exemplary in fact, whether he plays right back' or central midfield. “We still created five or sue

good chances, Keith Lord and his helpers did very well to get the game on.” • Meanwhile, Paul Horridge

has gone on loan to Woodley until the end of the season following the appointment of former Blues’ coach Ash Berry as manager.
