Do you know the identity of ‘WT’?
HERITAGE buffs and local histo rians in Ribble Valley are being asked to solve a small mystery - whois“WT?” Clitheroe Castle is currently the
subject of a £3.2m. redevelopment scheme being spearheaded by Rib- ble Valley Borough Council. Redevelopment of the site, by
William Anelay Ltd, one of the UK’s leading specialists in the con servation and restoration of historic buildings, started last year and is due to continue until next Easter. A section of crumbling wall
between th e North West Sound Archive and the Castle’s former sta ble block has b ^ n carefully rebuilt - and a small mystery unearthed in the process. Site manager Mike Riley said:
“The wall was on its last legs, so we dismantled it, then numbered and logged each stone. “We then reconstructed the wall
in ex actly the same way, using replacement stones, where neces sary, to an exact specification. “We found a stone with the let
ters “WT” on-site. We believe it may have been salvaged from for mer works at the Castle and as it was in great condition we have used it in the reconstruction of the wall.” Clitheroe Castle has dominated

Eight years for conman

A C R IM IN A L who m a s te rm in d ed a huge d am p -p ro o f in g scam ru n from addresses in Clitheroe and Portugal has been jailed for more than eight years. P re ^ n Crown Court heard that Nigel Hud
son took a direct hand in training salesmen in fraudulent techniques and used his forceful per sonality to exert pressure on employees to keep up sales. His businesses, which ^so involved his Clitheroe-based son, Mark Hudson, deliber ately targeted elderly and vulnerable peopla Under his direction, around £1.3m. was
transferred out of the country - a large chunk of which he spent on a lavish lifestyle abroad. Hudson (49) was given a total of eight years
and four months at Preston Crown Court. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obtain property by deception and conspiracy to laimder money. The court heard that Hudson had set up and
run a number of damp proofing businesses between August, 2004, and November, 2006. 'The objective was to persuade householders to pay for services they did not need, for work that was far below any competent standard and at unfair prices, ^m e of those targeted had dementia. Guarantees were worthless and people were pressurised to have work done before they had had enough time to reflect. Police estimate that there were some 1,500 vic tims a year, including pensioners in the Rabble VaUey.
. The impression given was that the business
was European-wide, with a presti^ous London address. Nigel Hudson was at the top, though his name did not appear on any business docu ments. Money went on to be transferred into
, bank accounts held in Portugal and the USA, where he lived with his 26-year-old wife, Sarah Hudson. She was sentenced to three years and four
months jail, having been convicted by a jury of the same two conspiracy charges. Money was used to fund a lavish standard of living in a villa in Portugal, a house in Florida and exten sive worldwide holidays. Mark Hudson, (21), of Castle View, Clitheroe, got four years, having also been con victed of the same charges. Prison terms ranging from three to five years
were also handed down to four other men linked to the fraud, and another received a sus pended sentenca The former partner of Mark Hudson, Rox
anne Johnson (24), of King Street, Clitheroe, received 50 weeks’ prison, suspended for a year, with 12 months’ supervision. She pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obtain property by deception. In earlier court proceedings, two other Clitheroe men, Daniel Sharpies and Lawrence Baron, were acquitted of charges of conspiracy to obtain property by decep tion.
