Sicily for the 10-day competition early next month, having qualified in the top three of the Under 20s sec­ tion. Last year the Clitheroe Royal


Grammar School Sixth Form stu­ dent was ranked 23rd but, thanks to performances at national and inter­ national events, she has climbed the table, and even beaten her older, higher-ranked sister Louise for the first time. Although ranked sixth to Eliza­


beth’s seventh in the British women’s senior epee, due to University com­ mitments and financial pressures, Louise was unable to fulfil as many


Under 20s meetings as Elizabeth, and finished just outside qualifying in fourth. Starting at the Senior National


Championships in Sheffield, where Elizabeth finished 12th, she then excelled a t the second strongest event on the calendar at the Essex Open in September, which she won outright. Unfortunately, her best perform­


ance was immediately followed by her worst later that month, when she- exited the Bristol Open in 49th spot. But in October she finished sev­


enth at the British Junior Champi­ onships, and picked up points in her first international of the year in Bratislava. Sixteenth place in The Welsh


Open, and ninth in the Milner-Barry London Open, followed in November,


before her second international in Venice saw her finish 41st for more points. January brought her toughest


challenge of the calendar with a trip to Budapest, a competition deemed harder than the World Champi­ onships she was fighting to compete in, and another 48th place sufficed. And before the month was up, the


globe-trotting teenager achieved 35th in Dijon,- France. Then to cap her campaign, she


beat her sister for the first time in a competitive match in the last 16 of the Slough Open last month. Sicily on April 5th is next, but


only last week she achieved third place in a BUSA Modern Pentathlon competition at Oxford University.
