www.clitheroeadvertiser.co.uk Sargeson inspires Blues’ climb to safety

Clilheroe ....................1 Bridlington Town . . .0 CRAIG Sargeson's 75 th minute s trik e gave Clitheroe's climb to safe ty another shot in the arm aga in s t 10-man Bridlington Town on Saturday. Two goals in two

games from the second- half substitute mean the 40-point safety zone is ju s t two points away, thanks to a third succes sive victory. Clitheroe co-manager

h i -

Neil Reynolds wants 10 points more from the final eight games, and judging by this solid per formance, he should get them. The locals could have

taken the lead when Carl Lomax had a shot cleared off the line in the first half. But when Bridlington

had right back Gareth Slater sent off before the break for pulling back Anthony Johnson as last man, the Blues were frus trated until late on. Sargeson stuck the ball

IV

away from the tightest of angles after a scramble, caused by Dave Hankin’s centre. Danny Toronczak

could have made it 2-0 when put through on

down on 16 minutes. A wayivard Scott Red-

.head pass intended for Craig Sargeson was picked up by Chris Rosindale, the central midfielder running into the box to flash the ball across the area for the unchallenged Ben Jones to fire home. However, from a Gary

Craig Sargeson

goal by Adam Kozlowski, only to be thwarted by Chris Hill, who also stopped Hankin's rebound. Hankin also struck the

outside of the post, Sargeson had a good shout for a penalty and Lomax forced a near post save out of Hill before the final whistle. Harrogate Railwag . .1 Clilheroe....................3 CLITHEROE ensured their first back-to-back league wins of the season a t Harrogate Railway last Wednesday. Not since October had

the Blues won two games in a row, in the FA Tro phy and league. And, just like their pre

vious win against Curzon Ashton, they had to come back from a goal

Stopforth corner, Ryan Fisher rose well to power a header a t Jonathan Barker, which he parried for Russ Clarke to rifle home on 27 minutes. Then, with a peach of

a strike, Sargeson con jured up the goal of the game and quite possibly the season as he juggled a Carl Lomax cross with one foot and then the other to tee up a powerful volley past the sta tic Barker from 12 yards out. Lomax, Sargeson and

Fisher could all have added to th e scoreline before half-time. Lomax shot narrowly

wide and over, and near ly got on the end of an inviting left-wing cross from Sargeson. Then Lomax chipped a

ball in to space for Sarge son to volley left-footed at the chest of the Rail way keeper, before Fisher

combined with Sargeson, Anthony Johnson and Lomax on the stroke of half-time to finish a move he started, with a shot cleared off the line by Harrogate full back Ryan Haigh. Railway were far more

composed a f te r the break, and looked much more in control as they pegged the visitors back in their own half. Right winger Nathan

James and Jones proved troublesome as the side maintained possession and threatened with balls into the box. After earlier finding

the side netting, James gave Clitheroe a huge let- off when put clear on goal, pulling his shot just wide of the post. Clitheroe went equally

as close when Sargeson struck a free kick on the edge of the area wide of the upright. Railway su b s titu te

Aaron Hetwood forced two good saves ou t of James Mann as the home side searched hard for an equaliser, only for Dave Hankin to put it beyond them on 83 minutes, seal ing the game with a bul let header from another Stopforth corner into the six-yard box.

Lions tamed Dog Inn slip up

Clilheroe Lions . . . .7 Cononleg Sports. . . .7 CLITHEROE Lions went into S aturday’s game with a real chance of putting pressure on leaders Skipton LMS, but emerged with a dis appointing point. 'The away side started

the better, and after only 10 minutes, a Cononley striker found time to con trol a throw in and curl the ball delightfuly into the far corner of the net. The home team did

ts -

not learn their lesson, and moments later, Cononley saw a shot hit the woodwork, and had a goal disallowed for hand ball. But the Lions woke

from their slumber, and an onslaught followed. Walmsley blazed wide

from only yards out, McClean saw a shot pushed onto the bar by the keeper, and Walsh was unlucky to see a cou ple of efforts drift wide. In the second half, the Lions played probably

their best football of the season, with Jimmy Clegg pulling the strings in midfield. However, wasteful fin

ishing and inspired goal keeping seemed to be pushing the Clitheroe side to their first league defeat since October. In a last-ditch attempt

to salvage something from the game, Gaughan was pushed forward into midfield, and the pres sure increased further. With 10 minutes left,

and the away team not able to get out of their own half, some superb interchanges between Walmsley and McClean lead to the latter sliding the ball past the keeper for a stunning equaliser. McClean and Conti

then had chances co win the game for the Lions, but they had to settle for a point, which leaves them third in the table, four points adrift of the leaders and with a tricky trip to Skipton Town this Saturday.

AND

Boca Seniors ............................................................ 4 Dog Inn .....................................................................2 DOG Inn suffered their second defeat of the season when they let slip a 2-0 half-time lead at Memorial Park on Sunday. The Whalley side kicked off with just nine players,

however, two ’Tom Eglin goals fired them into an early two-goal lead, one that they still held at the interval. But, despite hard work and their very best efforts,

two soft goals allowed Boca to level the scores. The Hyndburn side then took the lead via a corner,

before a late counter-attack saw them kill off Dog’s hopes.

Keeper turns poacher

Langho Under 14s . .8 Rossendale United . .1 GOALKEEPER Jake Wallace hit a brace as unbeaten Langho clinched the Blackburn, Darwen and Hyndburn District League title and promotion. Wallace was moved up

front in the second half and netted twice, while Soorya Siva added two. Chris Heyes, Luke

Jarrold, Rick McGurty and Tom Jarold also net ted and Josh Walmsley was man-of-the-match.

Akzo Yellow............... 7 Langho Under l l s . . .2 FOLLOWING three consecutive wins, Langho were brought back down to earth. Langho deservedly

took the lead through James Blow, only for Akzo to equalise with a well-crafted goal. Akzo then took com

plete control of the game with six goals. Eddie Yates managed

to get a second for Lang ho ju s t before the end, rounding the keeper from a quick breakaway.

Riminglon Reserves.......................2 ■Ingleton .......................................... 2 (AET, Riminglon won 4-2 on pens)

RIMINGTON booked their place in the Craven Cup final for the third suc cessive year, again beating Ingleton in the last four. The locals should have had this game sewn up inside 30 minutes, missing a

raft of chances. Brunskill should have done better on

more than one occasion, as should Leach when put through by Johns, but from the resulting corner, Rimington took the lead. Carter’s corner saw a scramble in the

box, and Johns found the bottom cor ner. Unfortunately, Rimington took their

foot off the gas as a result, and with what was Ingleton’s first meaningful attack, they equalised. Rimington upped their game in the second half, so it was a cruel blow when

Ingleton took the lead. A long ball over the top was i

by all, and Ingleton’s striker maK mistake. The locals soon levelled thanks to

Carter and Leach, the latter crossing for Brunskill to tap home from four yards. Both teams tired on the sticky Rim

ington pitch, and extra time loomed. Ingleton should have won with what

was the las t kick of the game, but Anderson spread himself to see the striker pull his shot wide of the upright. Extra time came and went, and in the

shootout, Anderson guessed right to save Ingleton’s third penalty, and when their fourth was blasted high and wide, 17-year-old Liam Anderson stroked home the winner. The final will be played on Friday,

April 18th at Settle, and the locals are hopeful it will prove third time lucky.

Green maintain pressure

Hiirsl Green.............. 4 Langho.......................2 THE East Lancashire League champions came from behind to win this top-of-the-table clash to keep the pressure on leaders Rimington. I t wasn’t long before

Hurst Green took the lead, as a corner was tapped in at the far post by centre back Tony Coupe for his fifth league goal of the season. The visitors started to

come back into the game, and a curling 25-yard effort only just missed the upright. However, they did get

their goal on the half hour as slack marking from an in-swinging cor ner enabled the Langho forward to tap in from

point blank range. After the break, slowly

but surely Langho start ed to dominate proceed ings, and were awarded a penalty as the unfortu nate oily Bolton tripped Berry, the centre forward scoring the resulting spot kick. Green laboured to pro

duce any kind of quality football, and decided to change their formation and bring on Piper at the back and the evergreen Barton up front. The substitutes, espe

cially Barton, seemed to gee up the home side, as his physical presence rat tled the visitors. And the equaliser came

with only 15 minutes to go, as another Tipton corner found Coupe at

the back post, who head ed home superbly. Danny Taylor was

causing a lot of problems down the right with his pin-point crosses, and Green nearly took the lead as one centre was half cleared, with the loose ball agonisingly missing Simpson. The winner did come

ivith just over seven min utes to play, as a superb Taylor cross was headed home by Danny Walker. Green pushed on, and

Simpson broke the off side trap, unselfishly rolled the ball to Walker, who tapped into an empty ne t to take the points. Hurst Green host Rock

Rovers on Saturday, kick-off 2-15 p.m.

Late Fielding strike seals points

Grindlelon........................................ 3 In ta k e .................................................2

THE entertainment was high, and the standard of football poor, but it was the three points that mattered for Grindle- ton. The villagers earned their third win

on the bounce against lowly Intake, in a game either side could have won, but neither deserved to! The hosts found themselves a goal

down in the first half after a neat finish gave Lloyd no chance.

Grindleton drew level from the penal

ty spot, leading scorer Martin Cowey scoring with ease.

In the second half, Grindleton con

trolled proceedings, but failed to finish a hatful of chances, with Martin Dob son a worthy candidate for miss of the season, when he sliced the ball into the

side netting from yards out. I t was left to tricky winger Dave

Parkinson to weave his magic and put the home side back in front. Intake bounced back, hitting the bar

from a free kick, and then shortly after, the referee harshly awarded the visitors a spot kick, \vith centre half Ryan Faw cett telling the referee exactly how he felt, only to be sent for an early shower. Man-of-the-match Lloyd saved the

resulting kick, only for Intake to then draw level, but substitute Scott Field ing sealed the three points with a sub lime finish. Fielding could have claimed his hat-

trick as further chances went begging, but Grindleton hung on with 10 men. Grindleton are a t home again this

Saturday ag ain s t Carleton in the league, kick-off 2 p.m.

B CLITHERCDE Badminton Club A continued their fine form with an exed^fe

wm at Springfields B, as they work their way up the Mid Lancs League Secoiw Division. Consistently improving on their first half results, team regulars Steve Pym

and Louise Burrill proved their worth yet again, with Pym taking five games and Burrill taking six..

Paul Cronshaw and Christine Smitton, and Martin Meadows and Mary Brass completed the victorious team.

Gladiatorial performance!

ANNA Griffiths turned in a “Gladiatori al” performance as she created history at Loughborough University. The Clitheroe athlete won the interna

tionally-recognised institution’s Super- stars event last year, and has become the first person to claim the title twice. The competition is reminiscent of the

television show, that pitted elite athletes from different sports against one another - including rowing, gymnastics, hockey, netball, football and basketball. On the first day, she won the 100m, tri

umphed in the shot and won the long jump. Anna completed day one \vith sec ond place in the 800m. The second day saw Anna finish second

in the 80m canoe race and she finished second in the 50m swim, only for two rivals’ preliminary round times to knock her down to fourtL A football penalty shootout followed,

where Anna scored twice, before the gym tests, which involve a minute of press ups and squat thrusts. The proceedings were watched by Glad

iators referee John Anderson, who started off the athletes with the legendary "Con- tendersreadyl 3,2,1, Go!" Anna said: “I’m absolutely chuffed to

bits to win again! I t was very nerve- wracking doing it ail again, with this year having the added pressure of being last year’s winner and the one to beat.”

And she admits she would love the

chance to impress Anderson again and enter the new series of Gladiators: “Doing Gladiators would be a great next step on from Superstars, especially as John Anderson apparently said he was very impressed with me as a female athlete. “He also said he admired my determi

nation, and was amazed how I dominated both the female and male competition!” Anna was also in hockey action at.the

weekend for Loughborough thirds in the British Universities Sports Association’s Women’s Shield Final against the Univer sity of Warwick’s first team in Sheffield on Friday afternoon. Loughborough reached the final by

beating York St John 7-1, their own fourth team 4-3, and the University of Abertay4-1. However, despite a valiant effort, War

wick emerged winners, edging out Lough borough 4-3, despite a goal from Anna. Anna said: “I t ’s was very hectic and

heartbreaking. “We were so unlucky. I scored within

the first five minutes with a diving goal, then they equalised. “Then we went 2-1 up, and it finished 2-

2 at half-time. “They scored hvice, but we managed to

pull one back in the last five minutes, I think if we had longer we might have scored again.”

Blue Star ..................2 Whalley Under 14 . . .3 WHALLEY made a shaky start, falling behind to a scrappy goal. But they fought back to deservedly level through Henrj' Farnell. Whalley took the lead before half time through Travis Bleazard, but Blue Star took advantage of a lapse in the Whalley defence to make it 2-2, before Famell popped up \vith a second strike.
