ufacturing UK in Sunderland, the Qashqai is undoubtedly a good-looking desi^. The rising hipline gives it a


wedgy, athletic look and the canted C-pillar is a design cue nicked from the bigger Murano. The Qashqai’s front end is a good deal less extreme than the Murano, a vehicle that looks like an alien lander, the smaller vehicle favouring a more con­ ventional front grille and lights arrangement. A large panoramic sunroof


gives the cabin an airy feel. The dashboard is cleanly styled with a neat centre stack and uses better materials than Nissans


of late. Nissan has built an enviable


reputation for safety and the Qashqai incorporates a number of noteworthy features. Accurate electrically-assisted


power steering, multi-link rear suspension and beefy anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribu­ tion should well be enough to keep you out of a prang in the first instance and there is also the additional safety net of Bosch’s eighth-generation ESP stability control. KODA has claimed another accolade for its brilliant Octavia hatchback. The car has fought


of the car, including head room and boot space, traditionally reserved to the upper-medium car market. Vehicle technology also impressed


the judges, as did the range of varia­ tions available to buyers, including the capable estate, the high-perform­ ance vRS and the latest off-road addition - the Octavia Scout. Skoda's Head of Planning, John


French, said: “The Octavia has long been our best-selling model and this latest award proves the car is as pop­ ular now as it was when it first laimched. “We pride ourselves in being a


manufacturer of happy drivers, and the Octavia has certainly lived up to this ambition by offering perform­ ance, comfort and value for money. “As well as being the bestseller in


dealerships across the UK, the Octavia also does exceptionally well in terms ot business sales, proving to be the perfect fleet all-rounder.” The two millionth Octavia was


produced at Skoda's Czech factory in April last year. Sales worldwide for December


2007 were up 13.1% compared to the same period last year.
