Ramblers’ Whitebeck walk

WHITEBECK, in the south-west of the Lake Dis trict, was the destination for 14 members of Clitheroe Ramblers. The group, led by David

Taylor, was joined by a local woman and another from Bradford for the walk up Black Combe. Setting off heading north

on the bridleway, the walk ers passed by Whitebeck

Mill (where parts of the old watermill were displayed on the lawn), Holegill Beck and Hall Foss, a derelict .house. After a short break the group headed off on to the open fell, still on the bri dleway, and walked up the ridge to the trig point at the top of Black Combe. After lunch, which was

taken sheltering from the wind behind the wall sur

rounding the trig point, the group visited Black Combe Screes before heading to the big cairn on the South Top. Although the sun shone

all day, the view was disap pointing due to haze over the land and sea. On the descent, the ruins of the old copper mines in Townhead Gill were viewed before returning to the cars via Thistlerake crag.

Young legal eagles narrowly lose case

by Duncan Smith

“LEGAL EAGLES” from a Rib ble Valley high school took part in the local final of this year’s Magis trates’ Court Mock 'Trial Compe tition. Although they did not win, the

team from St Augustine’s RC High School, Billington, performed extremely well and will be entering the demanding competition again next year. Six school teams from across the county took part in the final, held at Blackpool Magis trates’ Court, with the Lancaster Grammar School team emerging as winners. The competition takes the form

of a mock trial, with pupils playing the various parts, from magistrates

to defendant. This year’s scenario involved the “defendant” being charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, namely a white female rabbit. Other pupils acted as defence

and prosecuting lawyers, court usher and witnesses including a noisy neighbour and an expert wit ness from the RSPCA. A particularly impressive in-

depth interrogation of a witness, from an opposing school team, was given by St Augustine’s “prosecu tor” Sophia Clarke. She made the most of the fact that the witness’s evidence in court did not match the statement she had made earli er, concerning how the rabbit was treated. In the run-up to the com petition, the St Augustine’s team.

Rovers defeat led to driving ban for fan

A CONTROVERSIAL defeat for Blackburn Rovers against West Ham cost a 43- year-old Clitheroe man a three-year driving ban and £860 in fines and costs. Blackburn magistrates

heard th a t Karl Yeoman watched the match in the pub after finishing work and left immediately after the match to drive the short dis tance home. He was stopped and

breathalysed and defence solicitor Mr Alfred Rebello said a different result for Rovers could have meant a different result for his client.

“He says that if Rovers had won he would have stayed and celebrated with a few more drinks and left his van at the pub,” said Mr Rebel lo. “As it was he felt fit to drive and set off on the short journey home.” Yeoman, of Whalley

Road, Clitheroe, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and without insur ance. He was banned from driv

ing for three years because he had a previous conviction in August 1997, inside a 10- year period, and fined £800 with £60 costs.

SPEEDING led to a driv ing ban for a Clayton-le- Dale woman who already had points on her licence. Gillian P la t t (46), of

Ribchester Road, was dis qualified from driving for six months and fined £60 with £43 costs by Black burn magistrates after pleading guilty to speed ing. The court heard she was

caught doing 40 m.p.h. in a 30 zone on Whalley New Road and because she already had nine points on her licence was disquali fied under the totting up procedure.
