12 Clitheroe Advertiser STimes, Thursday, March 29th, 2007 Fair’s boost for hospice

ALL the fun of the spring fair helped raise £175. Proceeds from an event held

a t Clitheroe Care Home are being donated to Derian House Children’s Hospice. As well as manicures and nail

art, there was a cake stall, raffle and guess the name of the Teddy competition. Every three months a senior

carer at the home organises a fund-raising event and decides which charity will benefit from the proceeds. The seasonal fair was organised by Joan Kemp- ster who decided th a t the money made should go to the children’s hospice. Our photograph shows Aileen

Brown giving Sheila Parker a manicure. (A280207/5)

Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, March 29th, 2007 13 Drunk teen (19) glassed man

A DRUNKEN teenager who glassed a man, leaving him “scarred for life”, has kept his freedom - even though a judge slammed him as a menace. Burnley Crown Court heard how

Mark Steer (19), of Woone Lane, Clitheroe, immediately rang his victim to apologise. When the police answered, he owned up. Judge Beverley Lunt told Steer

Ladies’ night is one to remember

MEMBERS of Clitheroe Round Table, Ladies’ Cir cle and their guests enjoyed a terrific night at the Clari on Foxfields. On a windy evening, the revellers turned out in their droves to celebrate “Ladies Night”, an annual black tie celebration. Drinks preceded a formal

three-course dinner, after which the chairmen of the Round Table and Ladies’ Circle, Rob Stevenson and Joanne Graham, each gave

a speech. Mr Stevenson eluded to some of the sub tle differences between men and women and ended with a bouquet presentation to Mrs Graham, who spoke on the wonderful time to be had in Ladies’ Circle and the friendship and fun that awaits new members. A raffle and disco fol

lowed the meal and special thanks go to Claire and Rick Ballister and Jane Stevenson for their hard work in organising the

event. Anyone who would like further information on the activities of Clitheroe Round Table or interested in joining can contact Rob Stevenson on 07855 826079 or via his e-mail address: rob@rt552.org Pictured from the left are

he worked hard all week, but then went out, got drunk and was out of control. She went on: “That has to stop and one way is to make sure you don’t have the money to do it.” Judge Lunt said Steer’s conduct

had been disgraceful, stupid and criminal, but if he was jailed it

would only be for a few weeks. The defendant would lose his job and that would be no help to society or the victim. Steer admitted wounding in Jan

uary and had been committed for sentence by Hyndburn magis trates. He was given 52 weeks in custody, suspended for two years, with 12 months’ supervision. The defendant was also ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation to his vic tim, James Hartlebury, and £250 in costs. He had no previous con victions. Miss Lisa Worsley (prosecuting)

told the court Mr Hartlebury was in the Dog Inn, in Clitheroe, and intervened in a row between the defendant and a man who Steer

thought was picking on him about the size of his ears. Mr Hartlebury pushed Steer in

the chest to get him away. The argument continued and Mr Hartlebury grabbed Steer by the ear. The defendant then picked up a glass from the bar and smashed it into Mr Hartlebury’s neck. Miss Worsley said the victim,

who suffered a lacerated ear and jaw, headbutted Steer in the face. At that stage the defendant tried to get the victim’s phone number to apologise and when he rang, the police answered. The prosecutor said Mr Hartle

bury went to hospital and was treated for two wounds. One was stitched and the other glued.
