Goodsliaw United........0 [hirst Green..................3
HURST Green moved to within a win of regaining the East Lancashire League title with a hat-trick from Alan Coar. Manager Andy Holden
made a couple of changes from the team that could only draw against the same side the previous week, Wilkinson coming in for Simpson, and leading scor er Mark Young having to deputise in goal for the
Rampant villagers
Grindleton....................ff Coirtinii......................... 2
RAMPANT Grindleton romped to all three points. The home side were three
goals up by half-time, and the result was never in doubt. Scott Fielding put the
villagers in front, heading home at the back post after a barnstorming run and
. cross from centre half Dar ren Jackson. And Fielding turned provider when he laid off a neat ball for man-of-the- match James Berry to fin ish with aplomb. He then deservedly
claimed a brace shortly before half-time with a thunderous strike that allowed the keeper no chance. Player-manager Lloyd
had little to say at half-time as the team were well on top, playing some good football on an unusually bobbly pitch. The second half contin
If-
ued as the first half ended, with Grindleton in control, and with the first attack of the half they increased their lead as a quickly-taken throw in from Jamie Clark son allowed winger Martin Dobson to race to the bye line and finish from the tightest of angles. Fielding then had a gold
en chance to claim his hat- trick, but blazed the over from close range. And with the home side
now cruising, a couple of substitutions were made that upset the balance and composure of the village side, and momentarily allowed the visitors tb net two goals. flowever, with 20 min
utes of the game remaining, Grindleton put the game out of reach with two fur ther goals. Dobson claimed the sec
ond brace of tbe game with a carbon copy of his first strike to make it five, and Martin Cowey wrapped things up with a neat finish. And with only five games
of the season remaining, and still an outside chance of promotion, Grindleton need to carry on where they left off with two games in quick succession against Rolls-Royce tonight and Keighley on Saturday.
injured Steve Young. Hurst Green started very
brightly, with Wilkinson and Waites gaining control in the middle of the park, and it wasn’t too long before the Green’s front two started to threaten. Goar had an effort
cleared off the line, and Danny Walker was unlucky not to score as the keeper made an e.xcellent smoth ered save. Goodshaw’s only threat on the Green goal came
towards the end of the first half, as the locals only par tially cleared a corner, with the resulting shot just going wide. Hurst Green started to
tighten the screw into the second half, and were rewarded for their high tempo play when Coar grabbed his first of the game as he turned in a Walker cross. The Green’s second came
soon after from the head of Coar, following a great ball
from the impressive Dewhurst. Hurst Green started to
grind the game down, and any rare threat was easily snuffed out by tbe defence pairing of Walker and Coupe, with the young Taylor at right back bely ing his age by putting in a polished performance. Coar completed his hat-
trick with 10 minutes to go after Tipton chipped a delightful ball over the stat ic Goodshaw defence for

Coar to beat the keeper and slot into an empty goal. Walker was unlucky not
to add to the score as he fol lowed up a shot from Coar that was saved, but he could only smash his shot from a tight angle against the bar. Manager Holden was
delighted with his side’s performance, and Hurst Green now only require a win at home to Settle on Saturday (kick-off 2-15 p.m.) to clinch the title.
Itiniinuton.................... •/ iVorsthorne................... 2 A GOAL from keeper Gra ham Kershaw set Riming- ton on the way to a com fortable win. The locals dominated the
first half, attacking from all areas of the pitch, but only led 1-0 at the break. In goal, Kersbaw was
only tested from range, and was up to the test, while he opened the scoring a la Paul Robinson, as his huge kick downfield landed in the area, with the Worsthorne stopper misjudging the bounce and watching it sail into the net. However, Rimington squandered a number of

first half openings, while defenders threw themselves at the ball to block goal- bound efforts, and the keep er atoned for his faux pas with some excellent saves. In the second half,
Worsthorne came more into the game, but this gave the locals space to break for ward in numbers, and Oliv er Maclean made it 2-0 with a thunderous shot through a crowd of players into the top corner. However, the visitors
pulled one back at the far post after Rimington failed to clear. Jon Penman created a
chance for himself, only for the keeper to block his shot.
but he had a hand in the third as he squared the ball, the defender mis-controlled it, and substitute David Whalley nipped in to calm ly slot home. Penman got the reward
for his efforts when he beat the off-side trap, rounded the keeper and finished well. Worsthorne grabbed a
consolation with the last kick of the match. Rimington will look to
keep their recent run going at home to Kelbrook on Saturday, before next week’s cup quarter-final at home to Langho. The club thank match sponsor Kate Hooper.
WFC win stormy fixture
Skipton [ji\IS.................0 WFC Clitheroe............. 3 WAGGON eased to victory in a stormy third-versus- fourth Craven League Pre mier Division fixture. Waggon adapted a new
formation, packing the mid- field, which was where the game was won. Any rare Skipton attack
was cleaned up by defensive stalwarts Bartlett and Oak ley, while the goals flooded in at the opposite end. Sullivan scored the locals’
first goal with a sweet strike from the edge of the box, and Geoff Young bagged the second a minute later when he controlled a long
ball forward with his chest and turned to roll the ball into the net from 10 yards. This was reward for the
hard work of Young and Matt Coulter, who chased many a long ball and lost cause throughout the after noon in order to put the defenders under pressure. WFC were slow to start
in the second half as Skip- ton had their best opportu nities to score, but Gaskell and the WFC defence held firm. Coulter had a great
penalty shout turned down before the move of the match, involving him and Sullivan on the right wing.
Killer touch is missing Waddington..................0
liradtey..........................■/ MISSING six regulars, the locals still created enough chances to win the game, but profligate finishing cost them dear. The opening 15 minutes
were even, but within two minutes, Bradley went in front from the spot. The villagers thought
they had equalised soon after, only to see the effort disallowed for off-side. And on the half hour,
Bradley doubled their lead with a suspiciously off-side looking strike. After the break,
Waddington put Bradley under sustained pressure, but were unable to apply
the killer touch, and the visitors went further ahead 20 minutes from time when Wayne Leach allowed a speculative shot to slip through his hands. Waddington threw bod
ies forward to try and sal vage something from the game, but Bradley added a fourth with five minutes to go.
Despite conceding four
goals, the effort and com mitment could not be faulted, and the locals will hope to be improve in front of goal. Waddington are next in
action on Tuesday at home to Gargrave (kick-off 6-30 p.m.). All players will be contacted by telephone.
was banged home by Stod- dart at the far post. The game was all but
done as a contest, and things turned nasty as a horrific tackle from behind on Sullivan resulted in the first of a number of yellow cards, and there was a stamp on WFC’s Brown, which caused up-roar amongst the visiting side. In all, a hard-fought
game resulted in WFC bringing the points back to Clitheroe, which also sets up what could be an x-rated semi-final cup clash between the two teams in three weeks’ time.
Griffin's Head............. 2 Dog fn n .........................0 DOG Inn’s hopes of lifting the Terry Cattermole Tro phy ended with this semi final defeat to defending champions Griffin’s Head. Two cruel individual
slips, 10 minutes either side of half-time, proved fatal for Dog, and the Whalley side were unable to seriously threaten a comeback. Grateful to the support
ers who turned out in force to cheer on his side. Dog manager Simon Kerins was disappointed that, for the third time in six sea sons, his team's cup chal lenge had ended a t the hands of Griffin’s Head.
play football on a dreadful surface, but it became clear that they would have to alter their fluent passing style to win the game. The teams went into half
time level at 0-0, with both goalkeepers enjoying a quiet afternoon. The second half contin
ued in the same vein, but the spectators were treated to three goals right out of the top drawer. The first was scored by
the villagers through flying winger Phil Peck. Steve Proctor picked the
ball up on the right and picked out the bursting run of Peck, who produced the deftest of finishes. Ghipping extended their
lead through a moment of brilliance from midfield dynamo Chris Leighton, after Chipping won a free kick 25 yards from goal. Leighton stepped up to
the ball and unleashed an unstoppable effort that would still be travelling had the net not been there. Chipping looked to have
the game sealed following these two classy efforts, but they were made to sweat as Leyland pulled a goal back with an equally fine free kick. After the striker was
taken down, the visiting defender lifted the free kick over the wall and into the net off the underside of the bar.
However, this goal was to
prove just a consolation as the Chipping back four repelled late Leyland pres sure to see the villagers home 2-1. Chipping continue their
superb post-Christmas run which has seen them take maximum points from their five league games. They will be looking to
extend this run as they travel to league leaders Hal- sall on Saturday, looking to close the gap further at the top.

ward to starting afresh next season, when they move up to 11-a-side football. Langho Under 10s......... 1 .Darwen Rangers Lads.. .0 LANGHO secured second place in the league after this' hard-fought game played in great spirit at the Rydings. Consistent pressure from
the home side forced excel lent saves from the Darwen keeper, and it wasn’t until late in the second half that a fantastic run from man- of-the-match James Blow resulted in an excellent fin ish from Edward Yates to give Langho victory.

They did, however, increase their lead through Bentley, but this was the end of the scoring. and created most of the opening chances, but it was n’t until the 15th minute when Travis burst through to score the opening goal. Rossendale hit back with
an equaliser, but winger Ben Ratcliffe ensured a

Whalley off to a great start when Henry Farnell pounced to grab his first of two, after the United keeper parried a fine shot. Rossendale were forced
into action, and soon found themselves level after a cou ple of one on ones with Whalley keeper Nico Baron went the home side’s way. Whalley were not to suc

without three first team regulars, they controlled the first half while playing with @ the wind, but failed to seri- ously threaten the opposi tion goal. And the second half

Three more goals fol-

ckp ol in the second half, and eager to score another
The home side repeatedly
cleared the ball from the D, only to see Clitheroe pick it up and hit it straight back, and eventually Fran Griffiths neat ly slotted the ball home to give Clitheroe their second goal. Relaxed and confident at
two goals up, Clitheroe strung together some fantastic passes and grabbed a third thanks to Helen Hutchinson, before Grif fiths scored the fourth and final goal to put the game well and truely beyond Blackpool’s reach. Players-of-the-match were
Andrea Guthrie and Alison Heaton.
