FOLLOWING a couple of team events, the singles season kicked off at Myt- ton Fold with a monthly medal. In an extremely well
contested event, Mark Slater took the honours with a fine 87-19-68, emerging victorious by a single shot from Shaun Livesey (81-12-69). Divisional prizes were
taken by Matt Bowers (79-10-69) and Duncan Rogers (84-14-70) in Divi sion One; Matt Walsh (88- 16-72) and Alan Moorby (88-15-73)in the Second Division with Stuart Clemson (95-25-70) and Chris Czyzyk (101-28-73) winning the Third Divi sion prizes. John Kirk’s driving-in
ceremony as the new cap tain at Stonyhurst was fol lowed by a mi.xed Texas Scramble. The winning team of S.
Alcock, J. Alcock, A. Baron and M. Kerrigan posted a fantastic nett score of 58.8. Clitheroe ladies have
progressed in two national competition. The ladies’ team beat
Harwood 4-1 to go through to the next round of the Mail on Sunday event. And Jane Smith and
Sarah Walton beat oppo nents from Blackburn 6 and 5 in the Daily Mail Foursomes.

ClUheroeRUFC.........15 Broughton .................19 CLI'THEROE again managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as they were the architects of their own downfall. Mistakes and unforced
errors were the locals’ main failings, as too often they failed to do the sim ple things correctly, com pounding the mistake by trying unnecessarily over complicated moves, instead of the basics. Clitheroe were at least
able to welcome back their club captain into the team to lead the players for the first time since the new year. Add the versatile mobil
ity of Mark Curphy into the pack, and also the promising Kieron Keough in the centres, and the Lit- tlemoor men had some cause for optimism. As ever, they got off to
the worst possible start, conceding a try in the first five minutes, but they began to knuckle down to the job in hand. The forwards made
good yardage in the driv ing mauls, and Keough was first on the score sheet for the Maroons, bar relling over from short range.
again, this time Nathan Peel skipping over tor the score. Then it was the turn of
Rick Slinger, the back row come centre, who used his forward’s instinct to sniff out the line. Unfortunately, Peel had
left his kicking boots behind, and non of the tries were converted. Indeed this was as good
as it got for the Littlemoor outfit. The locals looked in
control at the interval, but the old failings soon reared their ugly heads once Broughton turned on the pressure. It wasn’t e.xactly panic stations, but their was lit- tle-to-no calmness when they were under the cosh and bogged down in their own quarter. And as soon as they won
the ball, it was far too eas ily given away again, leav ing no chance to create any momentum of their own. So it was no real sur
prise to Clitheroe’s small, faithful band of specta tors, when Broughton clinched the winning score, which they deserved and wanted more than Clitheroe. On Saturday Clitheroe
host Thornton Cleveleys at Littlemoor, kick-off 3 p.m.
Swimming
CLITHEROE Dolphins’ youngest swimmers enjoyed great success at the North West Micro- League gala in Lancaster. Although the team fin
ished fourth behind Pre ston B, Colne and Lan caster, there were some excellent performances. For the girls, 10-year-
old Megan Horbury won the two-length backstroke and freestyle events, and 11-3'ear-oId Bethany Jones took the honours in the two-length breaststroke. Megan then joined the
10-year-olds’ freestyle relay team of Rachel Fox, Rebekah Rodgers and Sorcha Bowles to win gold. Meanwhile for the boys,
10-year-old Andrew Tom linson won the two-length breaststroke and single length butterfly, and 11- year-old Jack Dewhurst took first place in the backstroke for his age group, as did 10-year-old Sam Jones in his section. This was followed by
success in the 10-year-olds’ freestyle relay, where Sam and Andrew joined William Murray and Reuben Hirst in another first place finish. Before Andrew, Sam
and William joined Cal lum Doherty in the med ley relay for another gold medal.
Tennis
CLITHEROE Tennis Club opens the doors to its new clubhouse next month. The club hold their
annual open day on Sun day, April 22nd, and are hoping to attract new members. The 2007 season starts
at the beginning of the month, and as a joining incentive, new adult mem bers are welcome to play for free during April. The clubhouse is
equipped with kitchen, changing and shower facil ities, overlooking the three courts on the Clitheroe Cricket Club site. And according to club
member Phil Mileham, it marks the beginning of further exciting new devel opments in the future: "It will be an excellent facility for members to use, and be the centrepiece for social events, barbecues and the like planned for the sum mer months.” The club offers a variety
of tennis to suit plaj'ers of all standards, whether they want to play for fun or more competitivelj’. Mileham added: "We
are looking for new mem bers - either people who have never plaj’ed before, ' and are keen to join for fun with family or friends, or those who may wish to play a little bit more com- petitivelj'" Adult club nights are
held on Mondays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. Junior club night is on a Wednesday from 5-30 p.m., and coaching will also be available to juniors on a Friday night. For the more social
players, Clitheroe also host American tourna ments on Sundays and particularly encourage families to come down and enjoy these events. I t’s not all about tennis,
as the club will we be hold ing a Summer Ball and other social events during the season. But for the more com
petitive players, the club Mil once again be entering teams in to the East Lan cashire League - one jun ior, two open and two mixed teams. The Open A Team had -
a good season last year as they finished runners-up in the league and reached the final of the cup compe tition, where they lost out to a strong Park Wood team on both occasions If you want to find out
more, get down to Chat- burn Road on a Monday , or Thursday night, from 7 p.m., or on a Sunday after noon from 1-30 p.m. The first adult club
night is on Monday and the first Sunday afternoon American tournament will •, be on April 22nd.
