enues and Benefits Department has been sending out flyers with council tax bills and working with the Department for Work and Pensions to identify those people who might qualify for benefit. ■ Nationally, four out of 10 pensioners fail to apply for council tax benefit and some of them could be entitled to a full 100% discount.

Mr Mark Edmondson, the council’s

Revenues and Benefits Manager, said: “There are many elderly people in Ribble Valley, but a low take-up of council tax benefit. Many of the elderly might not have a high income, but could be ‘asset rich’ and so assume they will not qualify. “However, we are encouraging all elder

ly people to apply, because they may be pleasantly surprised!" Ribble Valley senior citizens claimed

more than £28,000 in extra council tax benefit last year. Anyone over 60 on either a state or occu pational pension, or both, is asked to con tact the Ribble Valley Council Benefits Helpline on 01200 414453 for more advice and information.

Chernobyl children are coming again

TWENTY children from the Cher nobyl area in Belarus will be enjoying a month’s visit to this area, starting on June 11th, thanks to the Clitheroe branch of the Friends of Chernobyl’s Children. Excursions have been arranged for

them most afternoons and occasionally for a full day. On weekday mornings the children

will generally be kept occupied in an informal classroom situation where they will be taught English and partic ipate in a variety of other activities, such as drawing, learning craft skills and cooking. It is in this area that any help would

be greatly appreciated. The charity is looking for any retired

teachers, or people with similar experi ence, who would be willing to offer a few hours on a couple of mornings starting in mid-June. They are looking for people with

skills that they can pass on in any sub ject that would gain the interest of a child aged seven to 12. So, if you think that you could fit the

bill, please contact the group’s secre tary, David Wyrher, on 01200 423219 and you could be not only helping to stimulate young brains, but also doing something that is spiritually rewarding to yourself!

Planners given pat on back!

www.clitheroetoday.co.uk

PLANNERS at Ribble Valley Bor ough Council have received a pat on the back from Government inspectors. The council’s Building and Develop

ment Control Department has been praised by the Government Office North West for exceeding national tar gets for the determination of planning applications. All “major” planning applications received by the council

were determined within 13 weeks dur ing the last quarter of 2006, as opposed to a national target of 60%. During the same period, 79% of

“minor” applications were determined within eight weeks, as opposed to a national target of 65%, and 92% of “other” applications were determined, also within eight weeks, as opposed to a national target of 80 “/o.

Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, March 29th, 2007 29 A spokesman for Government Office

North West said: “I am very pleased to note that Ribble Valley Borough Council’s planning performance has improved to the point that it is now exceeding standard targets in all three categories. It is not easy to raise per formance levels to meet Government targets, but the authority has worked well to achieve Best Value targets.”
