SPECIALIST black-and-white photographer John Barton, from Accrington, was the speaker at Ribblesdale Camera Club’s meeting. His talk was particularly interesting as he called it: “On
the cusp of a new era”, referring to his change from the wet pho tographic process to ink-jet printing. Typically understat ing, he just showed two boxes of his atmospheric pictures of standing stones in the Scottish
islands, cathedral interiors and bleak moors, without a com ment on the point he changed to digital printing. The Lan cashire and Cheshire Photo graphic Union held their inter club competitions in Padiham,
the first time in this area for many years. Up against the World Club Champions, Wigan 10, and other major clubs such as Southport, North Cheshire and Lytham, Ribblesdale - only entrant among the dozen
the
or so local clubs - did creditably in the prints. The most success ful entrant was Dennis Kendal, whose “Cooper River Bridge” scored 12 out of 15 marks. Ribblesdale Camera Club has booked Derry Brabbs for a talk
to which members of the public are invited. This presentation will take place at Rimington Village Hall on Tuesday, April 17th, at 7-30 p.m. and the cost is £4. Contact Lesley or Trevor Marklew on 01200 445681.

Snoopers’ Bill is just ‘bonkers’
THERE is no perfect form of Government, but goodness me, aren’t there many bad ver sions e.xisting? I like to hold up our own sys tem as being one of the best in the world, but even I am ashamed when I think of the postal ballot form rigging that has taken place in our own country. So bad has the rot become that the Coun
cil of Europe is carrying out an investigation into the malpractice that has taken place in recent years. We know that it goes on, but I don’t think anyone cares to own up to the extent of the fraud. One thing is for certain, and that is being
happy to increase turnouts at elections is onC'thing, but surely not at the expense of the integrity of the vote. I hope that we mil look again at closing dovm loopholes-which allow the system being so open to abuse that even Robert Mugabe would be aghast at what is going on. Democracy is to be cherished. It has been
hard fought for and lives have been lost and wars started over less. Democracy may not be the best form of Government, but please tell me what is better because I have seen many forms of Government around the world, including the Soviet, Cuban and Belarus, and what I know is that we should be more alert to the diluting of our own cherished system. Which brings me to the revelations of the

Freedom of Information Act, and on this occasion I am not referring to MBs’ expens es, but to that of our Local Government Chiefs. Who would have thought that the chief executive of Lancashire County Coun cil earns almost as much as the Prime Min ister and that our very own chief executive of The Ribble Valley is such good value for money. (Although much more expensive than me.)
When you open your council tax bills, we
should all be aware as to what costs what, and why is it that when inflation is running at about 3% that our council tax bills are almost double that rate? There is clearly something wrong somewhere and I think we need to be alarmed at these increases. We are lucky in the Ribble Valley ha\dng one of the lowest, but we should all recognise that some of the increases are too much and not accountable to the voters at election time. Finally, I want to assure all my con

stituents that I will fight the “snoopers’ charter” tooth and nail. I do not want to give the right to any official to enter our homes to see if we have made any improve ments to our homes in order that we will be punished for these improvements with high er council tax bills. It is madness that any Government should penalise improvements while rewarding those who let their places fall into ruin with lower council taxes. I cherish my democracy, and I will fight
for it... but it must not be a democracy at any price, which allows invasions of our pri vacy and clobbers the thrifty and careful... now that isn’t democratic - it’s bonkers.

Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, March 29th, 2007 9 Go with the flow at Juice Bar by Faiza Afzaal
YOUNG people in Clitheroe are helping to build a new centre in a bid to “juice” up their social
opportunities in the town. With the help of Thwaites
Brewery and other local busi nesses, youngsters from Rib blesdale High School Tech nology College have been working hard to develop a Juice Bar on North Street, which is set to open later in the spring. The project, backed by the
charity “4 Youth”, aims to provide a safe place for the area’s young people to retreat, initially in the evenings and eventually day time too. Project manager Steve Procter insists that the multi-functional centre, which covers some 6,500 square feet, wll be an excel lent addition to the town’s dmenities and should prove a real hit with residents of all ages. “We are all very excited
about the Juice Bar,” said Steve. “I lived in the area as a kid
and sometimes felt there was a lack of things to do. The

centre will give young people a place to hang out in the evening - no longer will they be able to say they have nowhere to go.” Although it \vill be open to
all ages during the day as a cafe, the Juice Bar is pre dominantly aimed at the youth community, who will be able to enjoy an array of facilities including a games room, a recording studio and an IT centre. “There will be a vast num
ber of facilities and activities and we are still open to sug gestions. We want there to be something for everyone - we have already planned for music, a plasma screen, TVs, PCs, games, quizzes, table football, pool teams and foot ball teams to name just a few. “We would all like to
thank everyone who has lent a helping hand. Thwaites Brewery’s Charitable Trust has been very supportive as have The Henry Smith Charity and G. Calverley and Sons - we are very grate ful for all their generosity.” Pictured is Steve Procter

I '1 f-i. Sister attacked
A CLITHEROE man repeatedly knocked his sister to the ground and then picked her up by her hair. Hyndburn magistrates heard
that the behaviour was witnessed by their mother, who came out of the house to investigate the distur bance. However, when she challenged
her 18-year-old son, Adam Edward Croasdale, he punched a glass door panel. Croasdale, of Central Avenue,
pleaded guilty to assault and crim inal damage and to another crimi nal damage charge, which related to him jumping on the roof and bonnet of a parked car. He was made subject to community super vision for 18 months with a condi tion he attends the “Think First” programme, perform 40 hours’ unpaid work and pay £250 in com pensation and £50 in costs. Mr Alfred Rebello (defending)
said that, as a result of the court case, contact between Croasdale and his family had broken down. “Clearly drink is a problem and
that is a concern for someone who has only just turned 18,” said Mr Rebello. “He has always had a good relationship with his sister and he is hoping th a t in the months to come he can rebuild the relationship with her and with his mother.”
