Byrom boost for the Blues
By Adrian Capstick <2
JOEL Byrom turned down a full-time contract at Blue Square North side Southport to sign a two- year deal with Clitheroe. The ambitious 20-year-
old attacking midfielder wants a return to profes sional football, but didn’t feel a move two leagues above to the Conference North was quite right for him at the moment. The Shawbridge side
has helped the former Blackburn Rovers and Accrington Stanley player to enjoy his football again, and he is “happy” to develop his game further with the Blues. He said: “The manage ment, the place, the peo
ple around here just make me feel good. I’ve not been this happy for maybe four years now, they’re the ones that have put a smile back on my face. “You could say I owe it
to th e club, but there aren’t many teams around here who play (creative) football. T h a t’s what Reyno said from the start, Sve come here to play football’ and that’s what I enjoy doing.” Byrom linked up with
Clitheroe last season after being released by Stanley. And although he joined
halfway through the cam paign, the mark he made on the team was enough to see him named player of the season and leading goal scorer. He added: “From

Christmas onwards it all went well, and it all seems to be going well now too. I couldn’t wait for this sea son to start.” Clitheroe chairman
Carl Garner has gone to great lengths to get his man, and believes this is the start to a great season for the club He said: "We’ve pushed
the boat out to get Joel here, we’ve worked damn hard, he’s our-player and nobody can take him away from us unless they get their cheque book out. "There is no doubt
about his ability, and it definitely wasn’t a shock to us tha t he scored two goals in two games at Southport. "Neil Reynolds and Pete Smith have done a

good job, they've made us into a solid unit quickly, and players like Joel are the icing on the cake,” He added: "It’s nothing
that will jeopardise what the club is doing. Every thing has been done within the agreed budget for the season with the managers. “The club is in the
strongest position it’s been for a long time in every facet, what we need now is for the town to support us
as I think this could be the most interesting season seen for a long long time.” Byrom has also attract
ed former Rovers Reserves captain Gary Stopforth to Shawbridge. The versatile midfielder
has been without a club for the last six months, and is looking to make as big an impression as his former Blackburn team mate. Byrom added: “I played
with Gaz at Blackburn for five or six years, we always played well in midfield together and he’s probably part of the reason for me coming back and signing. “We were room-mates
together at Blackburn and we know each others game inside out, when he plays well, I play well.” Byrom is pictured sign

‘We can’t become a bad side overnight’ - Reynolds
BOTTOM of the league after two games wasn’t the start to the sea son Clitheroe manager Neil Reynolds was looking for. A 1-0 defeat at Woodley Sports
and a 2-0 loss at home to Bamber Bridge has knocked the edge off the Blues’ high hopes. Reynolds said: “We can’t

become a bad side overnight. I’m disappointed with how the last two games have gone, but we’re still only six points from the top. “There are high expectations of
the team this season, from the fans and the players. I’ve heard the lads talk and they expect a lot
this season. They’ve put a lot of pressure on themselves and we’ve got to get back to bases. “We’ve got to stay positive.
We’ve got another home game next to put it right. Whether we’ve done enough to get a good crowd again we’ll have to see, but we will endeavour to do better.” Reynolds added: “We’re going
to have to make changes on Satur day, swap it around and find a for mula that works. There are some lads that aren’t back at full fitness yet who we’ll rest, as it’s perhaps been wrong of me to expect them to do more.
“Kieran Fletcher comes back
into the squad and Will Exton will most likely start.” Wakefield are Saturday’s visi
tors to Shawbridge (kick-off 3 p.m.) and the West Yorkshire club beat Radcliffe Borough 4-2 on the opening day. The second game of the extend
ed weekend won’t be easy either. The renowned football chant of
"It's just like watching Brazil" will take on a whole new meaning for Clitheroe fans on Monday. . Thanks to the restructuring of
the UniBond League First Divi sion, the sarcastic chant may well
ring true when the Blues travel to samba-associated Garforth Town. The Leeds outfit memorably saw
World Cup stars of the 80s Socarates and Careca turn out for them, thanks to manager and mil lionaire owner Simon Clifford's links to South America, with his world wide Brazilian-style soccer schools. The Garforth boss has been
known to use high-profile players to promote his team in the past,. and ambitiously said when he bought the Leeds club he would take them to the Premier League within 25 years. That was three years ago. Gar
Driver leads Lancs home
FOLLOWING the success against Yorkshire at Tod- morden, Lancashire Under 19s, led by Read’s Will Dri ver, were well beaten by a very strong Middlesex side at Southport. Last week's game at War-
ickshire was badly affected by the weather, as the the second day was completely washed out with Lancashire in a strong position, having bowled the opposition out for under 200. On Monday and Tues
day, the game at Littlebor- ough proved to be as excit ing as the battle with York shire. Following a delayed
start, Lancashire declared on 252-8 thanks largely to Driver's score of 135. His runs came off 204
balls and including two sixes and 14 fours. That set Gloucestershire
a sporting 75 overs to reach the target on a wicket which was far from easy. The visitors were soon in
trouble a t 74-7 but, as in the Yorkshire game, a spir ited eighth-wicket stand of over a hundred gave the visitors every chance. But then a spell of tight
bowling and keen fielding saw them dismissed for 207 in the very last over. The final match of the
Under 19s season sees Lan cashire travelling to Cam- berley at the end of next week to face a Surrey side which is likely to be as strong as Middlesex.

Blues fans, anyone travelling to the game and staying over the night before could get in for free. Clifford has pledged to make
500 free tickets available for every home league game this season if home or away fans alike visit the club bar in the six days - except match day - before a game. There is a coach going to Gar
