cost special equipment package, which runs to all the things you would normally like but could not afford to perfectly finish your car off. Stuff like integrated running boards and
wheel arch trims, privacy glass, reversing sen sors and a sports mesh grille. This little lot would normally cost £900 for the seven-seater and £1,200 for the five-seater. Santa Fe Limited customers also get to
choose between four unique colours - Ebony Black, Sleek Silver, Gun Metal or Black Pearl. I t is a bit galling, however, that metallic and mica paint finishes do attract an extra cost of £375. This Santa Fe derivative comes at a good
time, given the arrival in this sector of a whole range of competitors. However, there are two factors that you will need to bear in mind before opting for any alternatives. First, your choice will nit have as complete a set of kit as is offered by the Hyundai. Second, competitors are powered by 2.0-litre turbo diesel engines rather than the 2.5-litre unit boasted by the Santa Fe. That does not seem to matter much when
you look at the bald b.h.p. statistics: like its rivals, the Hyundai’s engine puts out around 150 b.h.p. Where the extra half a litre counts in the Santa Fe’s favour, however, is when it comes to pulling power. The Santa Fe’s 148 b.h.p. CRTD engine puts out a huge 335Nm of torque, compared with the 310Nm being offered by the rival 2.0-litre turbo diesel units. Despite the larger engine, you can still expect
decent fuel economy: manual versions should return 38.7 m.p.g. on the combined cycle, deliv ering a potential range of more than 600 miles. Emissions are pegged at 193g/km, while the sprint to 60 m.p.h. is dispatched in 11.5 seconds en route to a top speed of 111 m.p.h. Overall, this is a car with a great deal to rec
ommend it, should you be in the market for a well equipped family-sized 4x4 on a manage able budget.

with a pair of decidedly more modem engines introduced to flank it in the range. The 114 b.h.p. petrol 1.6 and the 180 b.h.p. l.G-litre turbo option both make strong cases for themselves on grounds of performance and economy, but if you need something some where in between the 1.8-litre unit is it. A line-up of advanced diesel engines is also
available, which centres around willing but not overly rapid 1.3-litre 90 and 1.7-litre 100 b.h.p. options. Vauxhall has developed 120 b.h.p. and 150
b.h.p. 1.9 diesel options for this car of course- but they are a little pricey, a fee yousre not likely to recoup until you habitually clock up a huge mileage. Even a 100 b.h.p. diesel variant is close to £1,000 more than the comparable petrol 1.8, model for model. So, 1.8-litre petrol motoring it probably is then, if Astra motor ing becomes your choice or destiny. There a decent choice of body styles, with
five-door and estates available and three-door Sport Hatch for younger buyers. Trim levels range from entry-level Life to Club, Design, plush Elite and “sporty” SRi. Equipment levels are strong, the Life bemg
fitted with twin front and side airbags, ABS, remote central locking, a CD stereo and air conditioning. Opt for the Club and you will

rest-to-60 sprint in under 10 seconds on the way to a maximum of 123 m.p.h. Fuel con sumption hovers at around the 36 m.p.g. mark. Overall, this Astra is a hard car not to like, particularly in this 1.8-htre petrol guise.
