HERE are very few dead certs in the motoring world. That which we think is set in stone often turns out to be built on foundations of clay.
A car that is at the top of the sales charts
one year can fall from favour the next. Despite this, it is difficult to see how a car like the Ford Fiesta ST can possibly come up short. Hot Fiestas have long been a favourite
among the young and young at heart - and the ST will doubtless be the most capable yet. I can still remember the moment that my
brother, freshly commissioned into the RAF, arrived home with his present to himself, a Mk 1 1983 Ford Fiesta XR2 finished in Glac ier Blue. Having cut his teeth in a Triumph Toledo, the 84 b.h.p. of the XR2 represented some seriously extreme power under his teenaged right boot. He let me drive it in a suitably spacious car
park and I can remember being astonished at the brakes, the grip and the overall perform ance. But then I was 15. Fast forward a good few
years and we are now treated to the £13,595 Fiesta ST, a car that packs a hefty 150 b.h.p., but which represents only the first rung on the specialist Fiesta performance ladder. Yes, we had seen the Focus ST170 and the
Mondeo ST200/220, but the Fiesta was the first of the Ford Sports Technologies models to carry a newly designed ST badge without the use of numbers. This branding has since appeared on the Focus ST and will be adopt ed by all new ST models for the foreseeable. Back in the days of the XR2, a solid 150
b.h.p. was the preserve of pretty serious exec utive cars. Even BMW’s 3231 - the bench mark driver’s car in its class - could only muster 120 b.h.p. The Fiesta ST would eat it for breakfast before dropping the kids off at school, taking a run to Asda and then giving the groceries a good agitation on the twisty

route back. Sixty from rest takes 7.9 seconds on the way to 129 m.p.h. I t is easily identifiably by the beefier front
and rear bumpers, side moulding strips and colour- keyed detailing such as the door han dles and mirrors. Most will be attracted by a set of very pur
poseful looking 17 in. multispoke alloys. The- yare not quite as iconic as the old XR2’s “pepperpot” alloy wheels, but they are a neat set of rims nonetheless. Indoors there are racing style seats embroi
dered in black leather with bright red cloth inserts and finished with ST logos. A leather steering wheel, white metal pedals and a metal finish for the handbrake and door han dles help give the interior a little extra visual flair.
All of these extras fit over the latest Fiesta
facelift with its improved interior plastics and the sleeker front end th a t lends itself to sportier models in the range like the ST. More than 34,000 XR2i’s were bought by
Britain’s hot hatchback fans. According to Ford, the Fiesta ST puts them back into the heartland of small-car performance in a “great-to-drive” package that is accessible for driving enthusiasts to own and insure. Feel free to disagree. The 2.0-litre Duratec engine is the brain
child of Leo Roeks and his band of engineers at FordTeamRS. They have worked to create not only the
ST, but also a 180 b.h.p. RS version. Roeks explains how an RS model “would join the new Fiesta ST to demonstrate how two dis tinct Ford performance brands can comple ment our mainstream models. “I believe that Ford performance cars will
be true to their heritage and exploit to the full the outstanding vehicle dynamics that are
recognised to be an intrinsic part of the mod ern Ford range,” he says. He has a point. Ford has opened up quite a
gap over the chasing pack when it comes to vehicle dynamics, and given the paucity of talent in the Vauxhall Corsa line up the Fies ta ST should hammer its point home hard. The key threat will doubtless come from Renault, as hotter Clio Sport models are both inexpensive and abundantly powerful. Otherwise, things are much as they are in
any Fiesta three door. Head room is 8mm less than in the five-door variant, but the rear is no longer cramped or claustrophobic, rakish rear notwithstanding. Rear passengers also benefit from class leading knee clearance, and because there are no rear doors the shoulder room of 1,355mm is also top of the shop for a three-door supermini. There are stowage bins to the side of the rear seat and entry and exit from the rear is easy due to the long doors. As a result, it is a bit of a stretch for the seatbelts when seated up front. • The Fiesta had something of a low key
introduction. The ST will certainly be enough to get it noticed a little more among keen drivers, although many genuine enthusiasts will doubtless hold out in hope of a more evocative RS model becoming available. Patience may be a virtue, but it is not going
to paint as big a grin on your face as a few months behind the wheel of a Fiesta ST. Ford insiders have hinted that the ST is not much slower around the Lommel test track than the RS Focus. High praise indeed, suggesting that this car is as good as the old XR2. That particular hot hatchback painted a
grin on my brother’s face - right up to the point that he drove it head-on into a Volvo 244DL. After that, he had to concede that the
car’s crashworthiness was not all it could have been. The ST will be a much better car to crash in. But please - just take our word for that.

practicality of this Italian offering. It is not really class-leading in any one aspect, but it gets close enough in all of them to leave you not minding and still admiring that pretty shape. I was not expecting too much from
the interior, but this one is a huge improvement. Not only does it feel well built but it is also welcoming, courtesy of bright finish plastics which lift the interior ambiance. I also liked the fact that the controls
are easy to figure out without recourse to the manual. I t all looks agreeably Italianateas well. Fiat has really got the hang of the
whole soft-touch dashboard moulding in recent years and, as one of my road test colleagues pointed out, the new Bravo’s supple, textured finish would not look out of place in an Audi. That says it all really. The one thing I did expect was plen
ty of equipment. I was especially impressed by the amount of safety gear Fiat has packed into this car. Win ner of a coveted five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating, the Bravo sits

place and activating that simulated bouncy castle-style airbag set-up, there is ABS anti-lock braking with elec tronic brakeforce distribution and the latest ESP stability control system.
Behind the Wheel So far so good, but Fiat knew in developing this car that it had a lot of ground to make up if it was to match class-leading family hatchback rivals like Ford’s Focus in the field of driving dynamics. The gimlet-eyed drivers in our road test department tell me that they have not quite made it - but that this car gets very close. Close enough for me anyway. Petrol engines first. The range
opens with a 90 b.h.p. normally-aspi rated 1.4-litre unit. Most buyers, however, will go for the responsive new turbo-charged versions of this engine in either 120 or 150 b.h.p. guise. These use the latest turbo-charger technology to offer punchy perform

ance with decent fuel economy and low exhaust emissions. The diesel engines are probably the ones to go for, howev er. Flat has a well deserved reputation for being good with diesel power. Two 1.9-litre MultiJet diesels are
offered, again with either 120 or 150 b.h.p. The more powerful diesel was the one I tried and has some real mus cle to it, getting the new Bravo from rest to 62 m.p.h. in nine seconds and topping 130 m.p.h. With 305Nm of pulling power available, it is not going to have any problem.
Value for money Prices start at £10,995 for the entry-
level 1.4-litre petrol model, with the diesels priced from £13,295. These low upfront prices allied with improving Fiat brand residuals create a car that is very class competitive in terms of that crucial pence-per-mile figure after a typical three-year ownership period. Economy figures, naturally, vary
according to which model you choose, but both petrol and diesel versions really are worth looking out for, even if you are not a penny pincher. There is a lot to like about a 150
b.h.p. diesel Bravo, with storming mid range acceleration, yet which will nev ertheless average over 50 m.p.g.
