for their excellent exam results. Local pupils studying at
schools and colleges across East Lancashire were among thousands across the country receiving their A-level and AS-level results last week. Clitheroe Royal Gram
mar School headteacher Miss Judith Evans said: “We are delighted with the results at AS and A- level. The students have excelled again, gaining even higher grades than last year. We must con gratulate our students and thank all the staff for their hard work.” She added that 65% of
the grades at A-level were As or Bs. Four pupils - George
Duckworth, Manaka Paranathala, Vanya Sychev and Jung Yin Tsang - gained top grades in each of the five subjects they studied and more than 30 of their class mates gained four grade As. Several also achieved a B or C in the fifth subject they studied. Local students who
attend Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Blackburn were also cele brating exam success. Waddington’s Patrick
Carey achieved top grades in classical civilisation, economics and history and is now looking for ward to taking up his place at Nottingham Uni
versity to read politics. Clitheroe student Tom Battersby, achieved the grades he needed for a place to read banking and finance with French at Birmingham University, and Oliver Bury, from Clayton-le-Dale, will be going to Loughborough University to study geog raphy. Six students from the
Ribble Valley, previously pupils at St Augustine’s RC High School, were among the high-achievers at St Mary’s College, Blackburn. Niamh McNamara
gained four grade As in English language and lit erature, French, govern ment and politics and his tory. She is the last of three
McNamara siblings to attend the college. As with her brother,
Anthony, and sister, Siob- han, she gained straight A grades. Their father, Mr Anthony McNamara, head of St Augustine’s, said: “St Mary’s has done our family proud and all the students from St Augustine’s who continue their post-16 education at the college.” Daniel Holden also

Ainsworth, a former head boy at St Augustine’s, gained three grade As and one B. The college’s overall A-
level pass rate was 99% and 100% for vocational A Levels with 17 students achieving a Distinction. Stephanie Winckley, of
Clitheroe, a former pupil of Ribblesdale gained the highest marks ever
achieved at St Mary’s for her BTEC National Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development. Stephanie has been
appointed as an Early Years Practitioner a t Bright Street Nursery, Clitheroe, but will be returning to St Mary’s in the evenings as she is tak ing a degree at the college
in association with Liver pool Hope University in Advanced Study of Early Years and Disability. Stonyhurst College also
celebrated outstanding results in maths and sci ence with almost half of its pupils achieving A grades in those subjects. The college’s overall pass rate was 100%, with more than 17% gaining three or
more A grade passes and one student achieving six straight As. Among those celebrat
ing were Tim Lewis, of Hurst Green, who gained four As and one B in biolo gy, chemistry, mathemat ics, physics and Latin. Headteacher Mr
Andrew Johnson said: “We are particularly pleased with this year’s
results as almost half our A-level candidates gained top grades in maths and sciences. “These results come at
a time when nationally there is concern about per formance in the more dif ficult A-level subjects. We would like to congratulate all our pupils for all their hard work and tremen dous achievement.”
