ceptible than females and early diagnosis is vital as damage to kidneys is extreme ly serious requiring either a transplant or dialysis. Dr McKenzie added th a t around 50% of people on dialysis are dia betic, and although good blood pressure control will slow-down the problems that occur, beta-blockers and ace inhibitors have side effects, which can be very dis tressing. He went on to explain how the relationship of HDL and LDL in choles terol and a reduction in smoking, would all help, along with a healthy lifestyle, to prevent damage to kidneys.

Comic Phil will see runners off

by Julie Magee COMEDIAN Phil Cool will start a

life-saving run to be held in Clitheroe next month, which will raise funds to help people with Cystic Fibrosis. The stand-up comic, who is armed with a

controllable rubber face, will fire the start ing pistol for this year’s Amelia Cup 10k run, which will take place on Sunday, Octo ber 8th. Following a route around the picturesque

Ribble Valley setting off from West Brad ford Village Hall, the run, which is now in its fourth year, was inspired by five-year-old Amelia Dickinson, a pupil at Barrow Pri mary School, who suffers from the condi tion. CF is one of the country’s inost life-

threatening inherited diseases and affects around 7,500 people. It affects vital organs in the body, especially the lungs and diges tive system, clogging them with sticky mucus, which makes it difficult to breathe and digest food. There is currently no cure for the disease. Clitheroe resident Aimie Hamer, of Re:fit

Personal Training, who is friends with Amelia’s parents, Samantha and Symon Dickinson, of Whalley, organised the event along with Amelia’s auntie, Gail Bailey, of Pure Health and Beauty. Amelia’s parents explained that raising

funds for the cause is so important because although Ameha is doing very well at the moment, her current state of health is down to the continuous treatment she receives. “Amelia is a very active young girl, she never sits still,” said Samantha. “She has

regular physiotherapy and does a lot of breathing exercises. Her sister, Ellauise, who is seven, is a real big support to her, helping out with her physio and keeping active.” AH CF sufferers require d ^ y medication,

whether that is administered by a nebulis- er, taken oraUy or intravenously. Amelia has to take around 40 pills a day plus other medicines. In severe cases, some sufferers sometimes require lung, heart and liver transplants. Samantha added that the family “takes

each day as it comes” and were all too aware that medical advances achieved through vital research funded through events like the 10k run, could one day help Amelia. The run is open to anyone, with famiUes

welcome to take part. Entrants have been asked to specify if they are running or not, therefore keeping it a serious road race for some, alongside those who just want to take part in a fun event. Two cups donated to the event by

Amelia’s grandfather John Bailey will be presented to the fastest man and fastest woman. Anyone' who would like to support the

cause can pledge a donation on the website at www.justgiving.com/ameliacuplOk Runners can register on the day at 10

a.m. There is an entrance fee of £12.50 for those not collecting sponsorship. For further details call Aimie on 07793
