Golf tournament raises over charity

£5,000 for

A FUND-RAISING event, which consisted of a golfing tournament, supper and auction, in memory of the late Wiswell resident Mr Harry Stephenson, raised £5,500 for the British

Heart Foundation. Mr Stephenson died sud

denly last December at the age of 49 while out jogging. He left behind his wife, Mrs Julie Stephenson, and his two chil dren, Scott and Becky, who or ganised the function with the help of Mrs Carole McCart ney, the community fund-rais ing and volunteer manager for the British Heart Foundation in Lancashire. The event consisted of play

ing golf in 24 teams of four with all the entry fees donated to the charity. Later more

than 120 people attended a supper and took part in an auction. Lots included a tour around Granada Studios and the set of Coronation Street amongst others. The auction alone raised more than £2,000 with £5,500 raised in total. This was presented to Mrs McCartney by Mrs Stephen son and Mr Stephenson’s daughter, Becky. Mrs McCartney said the

money would be used to fund research into heart disease and to provide patient care and equipment in hospitals. Our picture shows Julie

Stephenson and daughter Becky presenting Carole Mc Cartney with a cheque for £5,500 towards British Heart Foundation funds. (S150906/2)

Warrant arrests at an all-time high

THE number of people arrested on warrant in Lan cashire is at an all time high. Figures released this week show that Lancashire

Police have arrested more people than ever before. Over the past three months, the number of people arrested in the county has exceeded 6,250 each month, the highest numbers ever recorded in a three- month period. Also, within these monthly figures the number of

people arrested on a warrant Issued by a court has also exceeded any other period, with around 450 ar rests a month. Insp. John Clucas said: “People who commit of

fences are, with the help of the community, increas ingly being traced and arrested. This means that we.are serious about catching the small number of people who are responsible for committing crime and antisocial behaviour in the county, with the in creased productivity of our officers we can demon strate that we are committed to bringing to justice more offenders. “Those who choose not to turn up for court ap

pearances are also being tracked down, arrested and put into our cells to be sent back to court in cus tody, so skipping bail is treated seriously by the po lice.”

A CLITHEROE retailer is reaching for the sky after securing a regional award. Dugdales European, of Chatburn Road, took

the title for the North of England and North ern Ireland region in the Sky Retailer Awards 2006. The firm, which was one of only six out of

3,500 in the country to be shortlisted for the award, also secured £5,000 towards future ad vertising. j, Sky sports presenter Mike Wedderburn was MC for the evening and other guests at the event, held at the exclusive Celtic Manor Re sort, in South Wales, included soul singer Bev erley Knight and Super Saturday’s Geoff Stelling.

Mr David Dugdale said: “I feel that we can

be rightly proud of our achievement at Dug dales, as we were competing against the cream of retailers from the big cities such as Man chester, Liverpool, Belfast and Londonderry, plus all the other regional retailers like our selves. I would like to personally thank all the hard working staff at Dugdales who have con tributed to this great success.” Mr Dugdale said he now plans to improve on

this year’s position and try to become the Na tional Retailer of the Year, an award which was this year won by a business in Jersey. Mr Dugdale and his partner, Ann, are pic tured with Mike Wedderburn. (s)

NFU ladies take to Brockhall gardens

CLITHEROE Ladies’ Section of the National Farmers’ Union met at the Old Zoo Gardens in Brockhall Village for an extensive and in formative tour of the gardens. They were shown the sculptures that are

placed around the garden and admired the fo liage.

\l I. .'It v<^oai»',y7r:r:.'- Susan Cropper thanked their guide for the

day and supper was served at The Avenue restaurant. The trip to, Tatton Park was also a very suc

cessful day out. Monday’s meeting was held at the Calf’s

Head, Worston. Fellowship meeting

MEMBERS of the Clitheroe and District Masonic Fellowship had an interesting and unusual talk on their work in the community by PC Pat Sutton and Community Officer Karl Elliot. They told of the areas they covered and explained

to members about many of the drugs now being used. There was great discussion between all the members with the speakers. Names were taken for the 21st birthday party and for the Christmas party on December 11th. The next meeting will take place on October 9th at West Bradford Village Hall at 2-30 p.m.
