Burnley College Sixth Form Awards for Excellence
OUTSTANDING sixth form students
from Burnley College were congratulated at a glittering presentation evening recently, held in the impressive surroundings o f Burnley’s Towneley Hall. The students were described as ‘terrific

pinnacle o f the year for the College’s Sixth Form students and a variety of specially invited guests saw the thirty- nine exceptional students receive trophies and awards on the night. These included the Mayor o f Burnley, local MP Ms Kitty Ussher, the Chairman o f Lancashire County Council and ex-student Nacressa Swan who was on hand to present the awards. Former A Level student Nacressa
progressed from Burnley College to Leeds University in 2001 where she gained a first class honours degree in Broadcast Journalism. She won a place on the
prestigious Channel 4 researcher programme before recently taking a five month sabbatical supported by an award from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to record a radio documentary in China. In the evening’s final speech she congratulated the students for their efforts and spoke about the exciting challenges that they faced in future education and employment drawing on her own experience and achievements. Award winners and Student Governors,
Sara D’Arcy and Natalie Parkinson, also took to the stage to give a short presentation about life as a student at Burnley College. Sara and Natalie are now planning to apply to Cambridge and Oxford universities. Students were selected for their
excellent results at A and AS Level, Advanced Vocational
level and
progression from Pre-Advanced programmes. Four students who won regional and national competitions and awards over the past year were also recognised for their efforts.

College’s 100% A Level and Advanced Vocational pass rate, achieved for the second year running. College Principal, John Smith, was
delighted for the students and said: “We instituted these awards quite simply
because we are so proud of our young people and what they achieve. We want to say this loudly and publicly to each and every one of them. They represent the best
o f local youth but they also stand for the hundreds of other young people who have achieved so much with Burnley College this year.” The awards evening is now an annual
event for the College’s Sixth form students. For many it was a chance to say final goodbyes before starting university, with more than 250 students from Burnley College progressing to a university . education this year alone.
