Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, September 21 st, 2006 7 Matters a weekly look at local issues, people and places Now Fm doing research!

y family, friends and work col leagues often have a go at me for watching too much television, especially soaps and reality TV pro

grammes. At the moment, I am loving watching

thousands of wannabe popstars take centre stage and get a tongue-lashing from the infa mous Simon Cowell on Saturday night’s “X- Factor”. Every year, terrible voices, tears, smiles,

tantrums and good auditions make their return on the UK’s biggest TV talent show. And although I admit I cannot sing, I find it highly amusing when deluded contestants, who think they have a really good voice and have it in them to become the nation’s next singing sensation, find their journey to fame ending before it has begun when they are faced with harsh comments from Simon Cowell and fellow judges Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne. “X-Factor” fans will agree with me that

the hit ITV programme is not only capti vating, funny and extremely exciting, but it is great telly on Saturday nights! “Have you nothing better to do?” my

mum often shouts when she sees me glued to the TV set without a care in the world. I reply that she should be glad I don’t watch “Big Brother” or “Celebrity Love Island”

Their future now lies in the hands of the

because: “I just can’t get into those pro

grammes!” But now there is no stopping me from

watching - and I have a very good reason to continue watching it too. F^or those of you wondering why... it is because Clitheroe singing star Jonny Lloyd has made it through to the “bootcamp” stages of the competition. So watching the show is now “research” for work because in the coming weeks the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times will be monitoring the singer’s progress. As reported on page one of last week’s

paper, Jonny (25), who is the son of Mor- timers’s Clitheroe estate agent Ian Lloyd and his wife, Anne, auditioned on the show as a member of new boy band “Avenue”. But the talented five-strong group found

themselves under the spotlight more than they bargained for when a national tabloid newspaper revealed that the band had been formed by a “pop mogul” - leading to claims that the group broke “X-Factor” rules by failing to declare they had a management deal before auditioning.

NEWS broke that a band of German gyp sies was making its way towards Clitheroe. The party, believed to be 100- strong, had left Knowle Green and was heading in the direction of the town, via Hurst Green. A crowd gathered at Edisford Bridge

awaiting their arrival, and borough and county police were present. • There was a shortage of labour in

Clitheroe’s cotton mills. With the recent boom in the industry, the whole country was feeling the pinch with properties for mill workers also in short supply. The situation was so dire, that several

of the town’s mills had numerous looms left idle.

LOOKING BACK 50 years ago

A HIGHWAYS committee decision against unilateral parking in Moor Lane brought a clash of opinion at a meeting of Clitheroe Town Council. Coun. J. Entwistle said Moor Lane was

a trunk road on which official parking was seldom allowed, but some plan was need ed. There was a possibility that a by-pass road might be built round Clitheroe. The quickest way to ensure such a by-pass was by continually blocking the traffic in the town. • The rock ’n’ roll film that had led to

rowdyism when shown in other towns “Rock Around the Clock” was NOT com ing to Clitheroe. This was made clear by Clitheroe cinema managers.

what the word meant, but from information received I believe it is an ancient Hindi .word meaning “be happy”. How many of us are happy

judges. Despite the claims, I think most “X-Fac

tor” fans will agree that the band was brave and talented enough to perform in front of the judges and then be given a chance to go through to the next stage. Viewers will now see the group battle it out against more than 100,000 hopefuls in a bid to land themselves a £lm. recording contract. No doubt the competition will get

tougher and tougher each week and my excitement will continue to mount. The judges will whittle the entrants down to just a handful for the live studio finals, which will be screened in November and throughout December. I know it’s early days yet, but it would be excellent if Jonny and his fellow band members got through to the finals, because it would give local people a chance to support the boys and fly the flag high for the Ribble Valley. So, if for the next three months you are

wondering what to watch on Saturday nights, tune into ITV where you can catch a range of good, awful and memorable per formances. And if, like myself, you find one hour of

the programme is not enough, tune into the “Xtra-Factor”, the digital sister show on ITV2, for second helpings!

A major Euro coup for Valley truck firm

AN agreement between Whalley Abbey Fellowship and the Government to spend £250,000 over the next nine years on ren ovating the 14th Century ruins would ensure the Abbey’s immediate future as a leading tourist attraction and conference centre. The Department of the Environ ment would meet 85% of the cost. • The Preston grocery firm of E. H.

Booth, which had been preparing the rail way sidings in Station Road, Clitheroe, for a £800,000 supermarket, came to the rescue of the town’s football club. The club bought the concrete wall running the length of Station Road from the council, but faced problems moving it to Shaw- bridge. Store bosses financed the job.

regarded in the road haulage industry, and achieving a STAS fran chise is a major coup for Steadplan and marks a highly significant step for ward in its business. Its sales territory for STAS runs from North Wales, Stoke-on-Trent and Derby in the south, right up to Ayrshire and South ern Scotland.

managing director, said: “We won the STAS fran chise primarily on account of our proven success in being able to offer hauliers a complete sales, parts and service package, including Mo'T testing and full 24-hour support.” STAS network manager

Goswin Timmerihans commented: “Steadplan is exactly the type of dealer that we are looking for- a highly dynamic, family- owned business with superb facilities, proven expertise and a first-hand involvement in the tipper industry. We are certain that Steadplan will make a major impact for STAS in the UK market.” With its new STAS

Moving online A

FAMILY firm of solicitors based in Clitheroe and Whal ley has invested in state-of-

covering most aspects of law, where father and daughter team John Houldsworth and Amanda Mead ows work together to run the family business. Conveyancing Solicitor Amanda

has been a part of the family busi ness for 17 years and has instigated the implementation of the new “Conveyance Link” software. Amanda said: “Although we are

traditional solicitors, we are very forward thinking and felt it was important to invest in new technol ogy. Conveyance Link is a new con cept in conveyancing and we are one of a few firms within the area that use it. “ I t provides our clients with online access to a personal account

and they automatically receive text message and e-mail updates during the conveyancing process so they know exactly what is happening. Property transactions can be com plex and time consuming, but the new Conveyance Link software will help make the whole process easier.” The new software was installed

six weeks ago and Houldsworth now have more than 100 clients using it. Every time an event happens, such as contracts being received and searches being completed, all parties concerned receive either a text mes sage or e-mail. Amanda added: “So far the e-con-

veyancing system has proven really popular with our clients. We now pride ourselves on running both a high quality personal and techno logical service.” Our picture shows Amanda
