CHATBURN clinched the Craven League Third Division title on Saturday without even bowling a ball as their opposition con ceded the match. It wasn't quite the finish the •villagers

had wished for, but the title was still great ly received when Jimmy Nelson's pulled

out. It has been a tough season for the vil

lagers, and losing their first match might have done untold damage, but an eight- match winning streak put the villagers at, the top end of the division, where they remained for the rest of the season. Chathum didn't have any heavy defeats,

and all their lost games were very close. Everyone has worked hard at net ses

sions, which has paid dividends. Chathum's pitch is also second to none

in the Craven League, well maintained by Paul Whittaker and his devoted helpers. The tea ladies are also well -valued by the club, as well as the scorers.

Local ^ Chatburn are, in batting order, David

Lakin, David Price, Chris Waddington, Richard Shovelton, Andrew Lambert, John Reynolds, Andy Booth, Steve Bowk- er, Paul Shorrock, Russell Braithwaite, Paul Craig, Ben Frankland and captain Mark Braithwaite. Chatbum seconds finished fourth in the

Fifth Division thanks to an easy seven- wicket victory over Pendle Forest thirds. The Fence side were asked to bat first

and found scoring runs difficult against accurate howling from Nabeel Javed (3- 26), Geoff Lambert (3-26), Ashley Ben nett (2-6) and Stephen Braithwaite (1-2), and were duly dismissed for 61. In reply, Ben Frankland (13), Henry

Kay (14) and Paul Woodworth (16) all made useful contributions, but it was left to Steve Bowker (nine not out) and Dave Greenwood (seven not out) to coast to vic

tory. )lf round-up ^

ANDREW Wray was crowned Champion of Champions at Whalley GC after winning the Brandreth Trophy \vith a fine 74-3-71. John Heap took second

place with 82-9-73. The Ultima Trophy saw

Stephen Brown (86-21-65) take first place from Nick Bradley (88-20-68). The last of the Cap

tain's social events herald ed another -win for Bridget Rees and brother Martin Byrne, assisted by Roger Altham and Daniel Rodgers (32-3.8-28.2). Club captain Roy

Broomhead, Rob Hilton, Gary Meakin and Andrea Whipp were second. ■ CONSISTENT

the course again and proved too strong for Paul Traynor in the men's sin gles, winning four and two, and Dennis Greenup won the Castle Cup with a five and three win over Steve Law. In the Tradesman's

Trophy, Simon Swindells produced a n ett 66 to claim first place over Philip Hanson with 68. Malcolm Brown was

third with a 69, ahead of Nigel Fitton with the same score. Kevin Roger- son's 71 earned him fifth. Andrew Heesom claimed best gross with a

2006 averages. Retiring professional Shahid

Nawaz went out with a bang at the crease to top the batting. And former Whalley paid man,

and now Chatburn Road amateur, Josh Marquet steamrolled the bowl

ing. The former Read, Ribblesdale

Wanderers and now Clitheroe paid man broke his own club record with 1,557 runs and finished undefeated

on six occasions. Which, added to the success he

has seen in winning the Ramsbot- tom Cup and the Twenty/20 Cup, has led to a stunning season for him. His top score in the league was 130 not out, and his average a mas

sive 91.6. Marquet, meanwhile, reaped 54

wickets for 747 runs to return an average of 13.8. In total 58 maidens were witnessed in his 242.1 overs. Not far behind him in the bowling

stakes is captain Neil Bolton, who made an average of 14.8 off 62.1 overs, taking 16 wickets for 236

runs. But both Farouk Butt and Mark

Hargreaves took more wickets and still maintained an average under

20. Butt returned 45 wickets for 784

runs off 238.4 overs for his average of 17.4 and accrued 41 maidens. And Hargreaves made 29 for 524

off 130.3 overs for his 18.1. Even fifth bowler in the list

Naeem Ashraf managed an average of 25.1 as he took 26 for 651 off

■ 151.4. Nawaz wasn't alone in the batting

stakes though, as Ashraf is right behind him in the averages. His solo Ramsbottom Cup final

effort isn't included in these statis tics, but his league form alone

recorded 718 runs in 22 innings for a

59.8 average. And he outdid Nawaz on unde feated knocks as he racked up 10,

■four more than the pro, with his highest score 103. Peter Dibb is third in the list,

highlighting the input Clitheroe's youth has played in winning the title. In 13 innings he made 289 runs for his 24.1 average. And skipper Bolton proved next

best with 4'78 runs from 22 innings for his average of 21.7. Meanwhile, beating the figures of

Read's Will Driver this season, or any other season for that matter, would be a tall order for any profes sional, never mind a teenage ama teur, as the 17-year-old has domi nated proceedings at Whalley Road this year. He smashed 1,023 runs off 22

innings for a 51.2 average which would put many a paid man to shame. His support group of Matt

Doughty (average of 20.8), Chris Holt (18.5), Warren Eastham (18.3), Michael Whalley (18.1) and Kyle O'Connor (17.2) all racked up 200-plus runs, but off fewer innings. Driver also topped the bowling

averages as the all-rounder claimed 31 wickets for 653 runs from 132 overs to record a 21.1 average. This beat both Frank Barden

(28.1 -1 9 wickets for 533 runs) and paid man Dodda Ganesh (28.7 - 44 wickets 1,263 runs) but the pro bowled twice as many overs. And Holt's contribution of 28 for 913 didn't go amiss for his average of 32.6. At Church Meadow, Ribblesdale

Wanderers struggled with a recur ring injury to professional Joe Send er! this season, but the former Nel son man still managed to play more league games than most to top the side's batting averages. In 18 innings he recorded 893 runs

for a 63.8 average. He top scored for the side with 120, and enjoyed four undefeated outings. Vice-captain David Howard was

n't far behind with 390 runs off 15 innings, with an average of 34.5. And Stephen Kerr comes in third with an average of 30 ha'ving scored

240 runs in 11 innings. Meanwhile, the side's bowling was

topped by the ever-reliable Terry Braithwaite, who amassed 38 wick ets for 596 runs from his 166.2 overs, of which 32 were maidens, to score a 15.7 average. Next best is Barry Spencer with

29 wickets for 670 runs from 155.2 overs to record an average of 23.1. Cricket at Whalley has certainly

improved this season as Station Road professional Prince Bradman Ediriweera injected life into the side with his batting performances. To see two local sides in Clitheroe

and Read have a player score over 1,000 runs is a rarity, but to have three out of four teams in a season pass the magic mark is something else. The Sri Lankan paid man accrued

1,182 runs in 21 innings for his 84.4 average. He struck a 152 high score and enjoyed seven undefeated out

ings. Lee Kearsley is second with an

average 25.6, having hit 282 runs in 13 innings, which just shows the dif ference the paid man made to the

side's season. Further large contributions came

from John Rain (22.9) and captain Martin Davies (20.4), the former hitting 298 runs in 14 innings, and the latter 388 in 19. Whalley's bowling was led by

Mark Fallon, whose 16.8 average came from 25 wickets for 420 runs from 94.4 overs, closely followed by Ben Dowling, with 18.8, having claimed 16 for 300 off 78.4 overs.
