has Veterans Day, while France has Armistice^ Day. The British commemorate those who fought, and are still fighting, in wars for their country on Remembrance Day. The British Remembrance Day is

always held on November 11th. This is the day that the First World War ended in 1918, when the armistice was signed in Compiegne, Northern France, at 5 a.m. Six hours later, the fighting

stopped, and to commemorate this there is g two- minute silence in the UK at 11 a.m., every November 11th. The period of silence was first

battlefield. The ex-Servicemen were joined on the annual procession by the Trust’s chairman Mr Graham Parr, chief executive Mr Russ Pearce, the Mayor and Mayoress of the Ribble Valley Coun. Charles Warkman and his wife, Ruth, as well as Whalley and Clitheroe residents. The veterans paraded

around the grounds of the hospital site to the sound of Balderstone Brass Bcuid before taking the salute. A church service, with

the Last Post and Reveille, was then held in the St Luke’s Centre based in the grounds of the Trust. The procession then made its way to the recently- refurbished Whalley military cemetery for the laying of the wreath. Mr Parr commented:

“The fact that the hospital was used as a military hospital during both world wars Is an important part in the history of Calderstones NHS Trust. “We are extremely proud to be able to

put on the procession and pay our respects to the heroes who lost their lives fighting for their country during the wars.” Pictures show above, Ribble Valley

issued a proclamation which called for a ,two-minute silence; "All locomotion should cease, so that, in perfect stillness, the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead”. As well as the two-minute silence,

It is estimated that more than

45 million people will take part in Remembrance..^ Sunday, v...the biggest demonstration of public support for any cause in the

country.

there are marches around the country by war veterans. The Royal family, along with leading politicians.

gather at the Cenotaph, a large war memorial in Whitehall, in London. The nearest Sunday to the 11th is

Remembrance Sunday, when church services are held in honour of those involved in wars, and wreaths are laid on the memorials which have a place in every town. Many two- minute silences are followed by a lone bugler playing "The Last Post", reminiscent of times of war when trumpets were as much a part of battle as bayonets. A poem called "For the Fallen" is

often read aloud on the occasion; the most famous stanza of which reads; "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in

the morning We will remember them." The fourth stanza of "For the Fallen" by Laurence Binyon (1869- 1943) These words can be found

adorning many war memorials across the country. The author, Laurence Binyon, was never a soldier, but certainly appreciated the horrors of

war. ' : This year, November 11th falls on a

weekday, and throughout the Ribble Valley schools, workplaces and shops generally attempt to observe the

silence.

"Please wear a poppy", the lady said. And held one forth, but I shook my head Then I stopped and watched as she offered them

there, And her face was old and lined with care;

But beneath the scars the years had made There remained a smile that refused to fade. A boy came whistling down the street. Bouncing along on carefree feet.

His smile was full of joy and fun, "Lady" said he "may 1 have one?" When she pinned it on, he turned to say: "Why do we wear a poppy to-day?"

The lady smiled in her wistful way And answered: "This is Remembrance Day,

And the poppy there is a symbol for The gallant men who died in the war.

"And because they did, you and I are free That's why we wear a poppy you see. I had a boy about your size, With golden hair and big blue eyes.

"He loved to play and jump and shout Free as a bird, he would race about. As the years went by, helearned and grew And became a man - as you will too.

"He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile.

But he'd seemed with us such a little while When war broke out and he went away. 1 still remember his face that day.

"When he smiled at me and said good-bye. ^ 'I'll be back soon. Mum, so please don't cry.' But the war went on and he had to stay And all I could do was wait and pray. -

"His letters told us of the awful fight (I can see it in my dreams at night). With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire. And the mines and the bullets, the bombs and the

fire.

"That sure did sound like an awful fight. But your son — did he come back all right? A tear rolled down each faded cheek. She shook her head but didn't speak.

I slunk away in a sort of shame. And if you were with me, you'd have done the same.

For our thanks, in giving is oft delayed. Though our freedom was bought - and thousands

paid!

And so, when we see a poppy worn. Let us reflect on the burden borne By those who gave very all When asked to answer their country's call That we at home in peace might live.

Then wear a poppy! - and give! j « f ' j i f i r
