Skilful speaker fascinates his audience

PRO BUS member Mr Bob Jones educated and entertained the members of Clitheroe Probus Club when he examined the fea tures which had influenced the economic development and structure of the North West over the last 200 years. Dwelling on the arrival and

departure of various industries, on the wars of the period, of epi demics, he showed how these dis

parate threads all combined to influence the history of the area in general and Clitheroe in par ticular. What could have been a dry-

as-dust dissertation was trans formed by the skill of the speaker into a fascinating and graphical account of the local economics of the last couple of centuries. The interest aroused was testi fied to by the number of ques

A Carers’ birthday calendar

A CALENDAR has been launched by a ^ u p of Whalley carers to publicise their work and mark the 10th anniversary of their organisation. The launch coincides with a

£5,000 lottery grant awarded in recognition of the valuable ser vice run by Whalley and Dis trict Carers’ Group. The cash, from the National

Lottery’s Awards for All scheme, rvill help the volunteers continue their work providing support to relatives, friends or neighbours, who have a long term illness, disability or learn ing difficulties. Member Mrs Janet Eddle-

ston, said: “The group gives people a chance to share ideas, get practical advice and profes sional support, enjoy outings

and be among others who understand the physical and emotional demands faced by

carers.” The Whalley group, which

currently consists of 20 mem bers, meets twice a month in Whalley Village Hall. Members hope the calendar

will encourage local carers to attend meetings and will raise cash to help fund the daily duties carried out by them. The calendar is priced £2.99

and can be obtained by calling Mrs Eddleston on 01254 387231, or Mrs Kathleen Nicholson on 01282 823273. Mrs Eddleston is pictured
