Funeral of village WI founder

by Julie Wintle'

.;'-:r.THE funeral of Mrs Hilda Mary Taylor, a founder member of Dunsop Bridge W I , took place on Friday. Mrs Taylor, right, was born at

Edisford Farm, Clitheroe in 1915 and attended the local Trinity School. The family moved to Backridge,

near Waddington, when Mrs Taylor was 10 and she later followed her three older brothers, Wilf, Harry and John, to the local grammar school. But when her mother died when she was only 17, Mrs Taylor had to leave school to look after her brothers and her younger sister,

i'jPMargaret. In 1938, she married Marshall Taylor and moved to his farm,

. Radholme Laund, at Whitewell. They remained there until 1976, at which point they retired to Claremont Avenue in Clitheroe.

Garstang Leonard Cheshire Home and also became president. After a very busy life as a farmer’s

wife, she had a long and happy retirement playing in many of the local bridge clubs and going on many holidays abroad, which had been denied her previously. Mrs Taylor and her husband, who

died in 1997 at the age of 91, were also dedicated members of the local

. church at Whitewell where her funeral took place. She spent three years of her life

Mrs Taylor, who also joined

Pendleton WI on her retirement, was also a founder inember of the Clitheroe Ladies’ Social Section of the National Farmers’ Union, of which she was later president. She became a member of the Clitheroe Support Group for the

being well looked ^ter at Roefield Nursing Home in Clitheroe where she was very happy as it was close to where she was bom. When Roefield closed earlier this year, she moved to Hazeldene at Cla^on-le-Dale. Donations were given in lieu of

flowers to a muscular dystrophy charity in memory of her late son, John, who died of the disease aged 24.,

Mrs Taylor leaves a daughter, Margaret, who lives in Simonstone.

Speed limit to remain at Devil’s Elbow

MOTORISTS are being warned that the 20 m.p.h speed limit on the A671 Whalley Road at Devil’s Elbow will remain in place until next month. Lancashire County Council’s

dearea surveyor, Mr Dennis Wright, explained at the borough council’s community committee meeting that major road safety and bridge work was currently being installed - resulting in an extension of the contract to December 10th. Two months ago, the road re

opened after an eight-week closure for a major scheme to improve the notorious stretch of road. In September, a near-fatal

accident occurred when a 44- tonne lorry overturned on the sharp bend - resulting in new repairs needing to be carried out. At the scene two workmen

escaped serious injuries by leaping for safety when the vehicle toppled over. They were hit by flying debris and needed hospital treatment.

At last week’s meeting, Mr

Wright added: “Additional bridge strengthening works have resulted in an extension of the Contract. “Completion is now anticipated

to be December 10th. “It is likely that the temporary

traffic signals will remain in force throughout this period.” The repairs include: Major

bridge strengthening, carriageway and footway resurfacing, improved signing and speed reduction measures.

Ston^ellers A rapt audience listened to “Gawain and the Green

Festive boxes Shoeboxes filled with small items for the O p e r a t i o n Christmas Child collection must be received at churches or schools in the Whalley, Billington and Barrow areas by this weekend. It is important to follow

the

instructions on the leaflets regarding items which may be

sent and how the boxes must be packed.

The lid and base should be wrapped separately

in

Christmas paper, items included must not be wrapped and a photo and message from the sender would be appreciated. It is important to state whether boxes are for boys or girls and a rough estimate of age suitability.

Hundreds of boxes have been sent to children who have very little and do not receive presents, and the Whalley Christian Group, who organise the collection, hope that even more will go out this year, mainly to eastern Europe.

the Methodist and Anglican churches will be held at Whalley Parish Church at 10-30 a.m. on Sunday. This will be followed by a procession to the Cenotaph for the traditional service and laying of wreaths.
